Our civilization is paralleled to the Weimar Republic. An unprecedented level of degeneracy created and propagated by the elites to make more money. I'd compare it more closely with the Roman Republic. At some point the elites will begin fighting among themselves over powerful positions in the state. Eventually the country will deteriorate until a civil war occurs between the two most powerful figures. Neither will really be interested in returning the state to the way it was, but those who want to change the system will join one, and those who want to revive the system will join the other. Eventually after more war and conflict, one man will unite the exhausted country under authoritarian rule and establish the Empire. Interestingly, in Rome, after founding the Empire Augustus encouraged a return to old moral values. But it was much too late. The Romans were mired in luxury and decadency and it would only end with the destruction of their power. The only way we could rid ourselves of it is a hard reset. Authoritarianism of one type or another will not solve it.
