[Improvement] How to improve SAoVQ and populate it? [Summertime] (64)

1 Name: (E„xE) : 2008-06-14 22:54 [Del]

Hello dearest VIPPERs. This is a topic I've been wanting to work on for a while now, getting more VIPPERs here. I understand SAoVQ has a great userbase of posters as it is but I would love to make SAoVQ more popular and get more activity in here. There is not a single really 2ch/futaba-like site anymore and I would love to work towards having SAoVQ take that role but I think the main thing getting in the way is probably activity.

How do you think we can increase the number of VIP QUALITY posters regularly coming to SAoVQ?

Obviously there are some flaws with bringing in new users which have been seen on just about every site in existence so I will assure you now that I will not allow SAoVQ to become shitty due to new users. There are only a limited number of people familiar with 2ch/futaba but that doesn't mean VIPPERs can't be created out of existing internet addicts so how can we create more VIPPERs and bring them to SAoVQ? Should we also advertise on other VIP boards?

I would love to hear everyone's opinions/ideas/hate etc. so please respond! In addition to this, if there is anything else you would like to see on SAoVQ (or any way I can improve SAoVQ) please let me know! Thank you~

Love,
(E„xE)

For one thing, the front page isn't all that inviting.
I like how it imitates 2channel's front page, but LISTEN TO MY VIP and the acronym SAoVQ doesn't really tell you or show you much. The random J-pop might scare away non-Japanese fandom types, but then again most people who know about anonymous textboards in the first place tolerate and MAYBE ENJOY that stuff anyways.

Do we have to clarify what this board is all about? We know it's for VIP QUALITY and textboard culture (AA and what not, etc.), but to me, SAoVQ should be a more all-general thing like 2ch's NEWS4VIP, where they talk about anything and everything there. But, with that nice SAoVQ brand of SECRET CLUBHOUSE NO GIRLS ALLOWED lemon twist. The thing is that SAoVQ is already that, it's just nobody does it because we're too concentrated on the VIP QUALITY and AA and stuff like that. We front the VIP stuff a lot, but nobody shows or knows what VIP LIFE is all about. We're too busy saying we're gangsta instead of living the thug life and showing that we're gangsta.

I'm sorry in advance for my inane, slightly drunken rambling.

I understand (E„xE)-san's desire for more users but I don't believe it should be a concern for users or administrators of a site not run for profit. Advertising the site is unnecessary, the "existing internet addicts" you want to attract already use email/im/irc/rss as a way to discover new sites and content.

On a constructive note what ever happened to the VIP Quality links website from some thread? Implementing something like mfisn (http://mfisn.com/) on a subdomain like the imageboard can be a way to "increase the number of VIP QUALITY posters regularly coming to SAoVQ." A VIP links site would require VIP Quality moderators with VIP Standards to avoid another Digg/Reddit shitfest which is another can of worms.

>>2, I don't think there's anything wrong with the front page. Putting myself in the position of someone ignorant of SAoVQ I would find the front pages mysterious and inviting.

4 Name: VIPPER : 2008-06-15 04:26 [Del]

No, SAoVQ is for VIP QUALITY. More volume is not what we want, but more QUALITY.

The imageboard was a brilliant idea however.

I wasn't invited and I came here by coincidence.
I do not deem myself VIP QUALITY.

Am I the kind of people you wouldn't allow on SAoVQ?

6 Name: VIPPER : 2008-06-15 17:21 [Del]

Italian vipper is allright with me.

Italy would be considered VIP QUALITY by some.

Feel free to stay and contribute.

7 Name: VIPPER : 2008-06-15 23:10 [Del]

It's hard to say what we could improve on, since SAoVQ has just started. It's important to always focus on VIP quality, but I'd like to see SAoVQ expand to other areas, perhaps news, (not the mess /n/ was) imageboard culture/happenings, user stories ect.

As for attracting more people, I think either posting on 4-ch or world4ch would be fine. Word of mouth!

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated. I think you're right >>3 and probably it isn't something I should be concerned with; however, I think that having a decent flow of people would help the site become better overall (more people means more posts, more fun, etc.) but yes you are certainly right and it should be something that happens on its own probably.

As for >>7, I think right now it would be best to keep SAoVQ to one board so we don't spread out the posts further but I think >>2 makes a good point in saying that this board should be open to ALL types of discussion so perhaps just having a dedicated news thread or imageboard culture thread would be beneficial (same with users stories etc).

I would love to see a VIP Quality links site go up and I would be more than happy to host it on a subdomain. If there is anyone knowledgeable enough to create one I am entirely willing to host it (I would try to make one but I don't think I know enough to make it good)! I will try getting in contact with siik and seeing if he would maybe give us the code to mfisn or at least a basic structure we could build off of.

Thanks a bunch for your advice everyone. Please tell your friends about SAoVQ~~ Also feel free to recommend anything else you would like to see on the site here.

But of course. We can't wither away like NEWS4VIP@4chan or 4-ch.

16 Name: VIPPER : 2008-06-21 02:20 [Del]

A big difficulty is that most of us can't really invite friends without spending an hour explaining the concept of anonymous boards, and how it's unrelated to idiots wearing Guy Fawkes masks. It means that people will only come from other boards - many of which are populated by people lacking in quality.

Also, right now, this board feels too much like DQN without character threads to have any sort of identity.

17 Name: VIPPER : 2008-06-21 02:23 [Del]

>>16
I agree with the first statement you made. I think I'm going to make a write up explaining what VIP/2ch/futaba is versus 4chan and what an anonymous board actually is. If not for SAoVQ, for the internet in general.

18 Name: VIPPER : 2008-06-21 03:09 [Del]

What I like about SAoVQ above any other VIP-type board (News4VIP and DQN) is that it actually has regular discussion. You can bump a thread and make a silly post or go talk about something as you would on a normal BBS. Or at least I feel like there's an option for serious discussion.

We could always try to expand http://tanasinn.info and use it as a recruiting springboard into SAoVQ. Most people are more familiar with wikis than they are with textboards so and reading about what VIP QUALITY in a familiar setting beforehand might help convince them to stick around since they won't feel so clueless when they come in.

I think I may have a solution to making textboards a little less daunting. I have created a sort of basic guide to what anonymous boards are all about. I'm putting some finishing touches on it and then am going to see if (E„xE) could host it so you guys can read and critique it. Maybe after we get it perfect we can put it on the front page or something and have it say "Not sure what this site is all about? Click here."

brief synopsis, possible inclusion of history
-What kind of topics are posted/can I post here?
-When did this site start?/Site history.
-Who are all these characters I see? (referring to Shift-JIS Art)
*possible link to description of characters (wikipedia, tanasinn.info etc.)
-All I see when I view the board is weird fonts and charcters. (referring to the absense of Japanese fonts/mona fonts.)
*location to download of monafont.

That's all I can think of now, if anyone wants to add more, go crazy, and feel free to actually write the answers to the questions. (I'd love to do so myself, but I'm at work.)

My guide is pretty general like it doesn't specifically talk about SAoVQ but now that you guys said all of this I think your ideas make a lot more sense. I'll show you what I have wrote so far and then maybe we can take snippets of what I wrote and incorporate it into your ideas since I think talking just about SAoVQ makes a lot more sense. Also my grammar is pretty bad. Here it is, without any formatting or anything. I was going to add some links and like terminology etc. on the bottom but now that we are going to make it SAoVQ specific let's change it up some.
Here it is:

A Guide to Anonymous Boards
By Toshiaki

What is an anonymous board?
The concept of the anonymous board was born on the Japanese site
2channel in 1999. The essential idea is that every poster is
completely anonymous. The board may be strictly text only or image and
text (commonly referred to as an imageboard).

What makes this better than any other bulletin board system or forum?

This means the site has no registration and no barriers, anyone can
post at any time instantly; in addition to this, anyone may view any
part of the site freely without attaching themselves to a specific
name. Beyond the ease of user, users can no longer be judged by their
name and instead can only be judged by their individual comments.
Hiroyuki, the creator of 2channel, said this in regard to anonymous
posting:

If there is a user ID attached to a user, a discussion tends to become
a criticizing game. On the other hand, under the anonymous system,
even though your opinion/information is criticized, you don't know
with whom to be upset. Also with a user ID, those who participate in
the site for a long time tend to have authority, and it becomes
difficult for a user to disagree with them. Under a perfectly
anonymous system, "it's boring", you can say, if it is actually
boring. All information is treated equally; only an accurate argument
will work.

Another reason to begin posting on anonymous boards is the unique
community and sense of humor all boards seem to have. The ability to
post anonymously allows for people to voice what they really feel or
make comments/jokes about things that are normally taboo. They also
develop numerous inside jokes (often called memes) which one will find
often become more humorous than any normal joke could.

Common Misconceptions
Not all anonymous boards are like 4chan, in fact 4chan originally
wasn't even like it is now. The "anonymous" identity currently present
in 4chan's /b/ is not at all what Anonymous is. Anonymous is simply a
blank name used to represent a user on some boards (see Common Terms
for other commonly used names); however, an influx of new users to
4chan's /b/ has left it completely confused and misguided. 4chan's
"anonymous" identity that appears at Scientology protests and holds
raids on other sites is the exact opposite to what real anonymous
posters are like. Please do not look at 4chan's /b/ as an example of
what anonymous boards are like!

28 Name: >>22 : 2008-06-24 22:17 [Del]

How to be a succesful poster on an anonymous board:

Forget everything you learned posting on a regular forum/board
This is something you MUST do. Anonymous boards are NOT like the rest
of the internet. You must come onto an anonymous board with an open
mind and a willingness to spend time reading posts BEFORE posting
yourself. There is an expectation that you will conform to and learn
the board's culture. A common example is emoticons; many users are
used to making emoticons such as ^_^ or =) but these are generally
frowned upon and are usually seen as a sign of immaturity. You can
learn all of this and more by reading the air of the board. Also
remember ANYTHING can be posted thus chances are you will be offended
in some way. After visiting anonymous boards for a while you will
begin to be less offended and see why it is silly to be offended by
anything as you probably have thoughts you don't say aloud in person
that are also offending to others.

Read the air / lurk
Reading the air or "lurking" is the most important part of becoming a
successful poster. Each and every board has it's own unique culture
(generally rooted at 2channel one way or another). It is your job to
learn it BEFORE making any posts. This process may seem daunting as
boards do not have a set of defined parameters for posting. The only
way to learn what sort of posts will be enjoyed is to spend time
reading other posts. You will slowly learn all of the injokes, common
posting style and sense of humor of the board as you read more and
more posts. Do not make a post asking about the meaning behind an
injoke or other questions about the board unless you absolutely have
to as most users will be annoyed by this and simply tell you to lurk
more. In addition to this, DO NOT make an introductory post or
anything of the sort you should simply become a fellow poster
overtime. Lurking can sometimes take only a week and other times take
a few months. You'll know you're ready when you're understanding posts
and finding the humor in them. Not all boards revolve around humor but
there is always lurking to done just to make sure you aren't posting
in a style that the others find annoying.

Add to the board with your posts
After you understand the board and how to post let your creativity run
wild! Make witty posts, insightful posts, and any other enjoyable
posts you want to make! But, before you post ask yourself "Will other
users enjoy my post?" if the answer is no you shouldn't post it. Also
do not make posts just to make yourself look good. This is an
ANONYMOUS board the point is to not be identifiable you can tell us a
story about your girlfriend that's INTERESTING or HUMOROUS but don't
just make a post saying Hi I have a girlfriend and we have sex all the
time.

Tripcodes are not for being identified within a board
Tripcodes are a function on almost all anonymous boards in which you
add a #passwordofsomesort to create a string of characters that
appears in the name field to identify yourself. The purpose of this
function is to identify a poster within a thread IF NECESSARY. These
are often misused and allow posters to use the same name on multiple
threads and be identified on the board. This is NOT the purpose of a
tripcode and effectively ruins the purpose of an anonymous board, to
be anonymous!

Have fun!
Most importantly, have fun and ENJOY your board. I think everyone will
find that once you are a part of an anonymous board it will be very
difficult to go back to the regular internet as there is not a
community quite like this anywhere else. You won't regret it!

>>53
There's more to viewing ascii art then installing the fonts. http://4-ch.net/ascii/ has a little readme at the very top about setting the font for Japanese and screwing with encodings. The poster also has to set the "text art" formatting when they post for SJIS art on SAoVQ and 4-ch and a fair amount fail to do so. I'm on a Mac using Firefox and I used to have trouble getting the spacing right even with the proper fonts however Firefox 3 seems to have fixed this.

To test out your setup MrVacBob over at world4ch just changed its SJIS board http://dis.4chan.org/sjis/ so all posts should display in the proper font if you've got it installed.

>>54 here, I've zipped the MS PMincho and PGothic fonts and upped it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?mhnytmy0iyi

Those are Microsoft's Japanese fonts and although Mona should be equivalent you can try them as well. Most VIPPERs are using Windows because of its dominance of the market so these are the fonts they use.

You can get them as part of the Japanese language packs from Microsoft and they're on most XP (and I think Office too) install CDs. If you lack any of those you probably have a friend with XP who can send them to you. I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn't like to see them distributed so I'd ask the tanasinn.info wiki administrator before linking to them.

To set them up in Firefox follow the instructions from the header at 4-ch but use the PMincho for the serif typeface and PGothic for the sans-serif.

I don't know how to contact the admin atm, so I'll just link to your post for the time being till I can talk to him about it. I'm sure it won't kill anyone, seeing as you've already posted them here.
Also, thanks for the fonts, I'll add them to the wiki now. iLΝMj

>>58-san here. I've asked the head honcho (I assume) whether or not linking to the fonts is allowed. I'm hoping I'll get a reply soon.

I'll see what I can do with the other sections of the article sometime tomorrow. I've been fucking around with the AA section too much.

I greatly built upon the formidable body of work performed on the letter H.

I have made HTML versions of both guides and have put them on the front page. Thanks a bunch everyone for your work. If you have anymore changes please email me and let me know!
