Look, I never understood this;
when someone posts a comment in your profile on some random INTERNET community, and the comment is one that can be replied to, where do you reply: in your profile, or in that person's? Posting in own profile might seem awkward, at least for me, yet by posting in someone else's, you risk having your comment read by someone out-of-context, and the comment seems weird and incidental in such case. The research proved rather inconclusive, with just a little over a half of the respondents in favour of keeping the "discussion" in one profile.
Tell me, VIPPERs, what is your opinion?

You reply in that person's profile. I've never seen it any other way. It's pretty unreasonable to expect people to read your profile constantly to check for responses so you write on theirs so they can see it and respond to it.
IM/PM/email them to take the conversation into private territory where it belongs.
I use telephones, by dialing into mine the telephone number of the friend in question. It takes only a few seconds to wait for a response, and depending on the availability of my contact I can either have a two-way voice conversation, or record a voice mail that they can retrieve later from their own telephone.
