As obsessions go, a man in Saitama Prefecture had a rather unusual one: collecting doorplates stolen from people's homes.

When investigators entered the man's apartment in Warabi, they found 289 stolen doorplates arranged in a circle around his futon.

The man, 42, told police he liked to collect plates that carry uncommon surnames.

He was arrested Feb. 5 in a residential district in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward in connection with a law against lock-picking. He was in possession of two doorplates, a screwdriver and a pair of work gloves. He was arrested again Saturday over the theft of a doorplate in Arakawa Ward.(IHT/Asahi: February 18,2009)
