It's impossible to play all the great classic games, let alone all the great obscure games that deserve to be classics, but it's fun to try! The idea of this thread is that every once in a while, someone recommends a game he loves, then we all play together until we get bored, and talk about it while we do.
This thread was inspired by a discussion in the general bump thread: http://www.secretareaofvipquality.net/saovq/kareha.pl/1232843359/845,849,858-866
Since we're pretty good at self-policing it would be limiting to make rules, so here's just how I think this thread could work:
Also, let's reboot the thread with stricter rules if there's interest but the free-form recommendations don't work out.
I'll let someone else choose where to start, or will post something later if nobody cares to. Maybe one of the games we've mentioned in the general thread the last few days?
I would like to propose two motions;
I'm sorry, it's not that I don't like this thread idea, but that it's just a lot of work!
>>1-san maybe you should start us off with an example to get things going.
I just want to bump this cause I like the idea.
How about we start with Megaman 2, always a classic, a favorite and the easiest of the series.
I'll bite, especially since somehow I never actually seriously played a real (main series) Mega man
Okay, im going to try and play through quick man's level first, just to be a jerk.
But most people go with metal man, because his weapon is the best out of any megaman game, and kills 3 of the other bosses dead.
>>7 Thanks for the tip, I really suck at Megaman. Hell platformers in general...
Well if we're going to talk about Mega Man 2...
If you want easy mode, do as >>7 suggested. Metal Man is pretty easy, his weapon can fire in 8 directions and has a surplus of ammo, and there's even an easy to abtain E Tank in his stage.
If you want a harder mode, try fighting Quick Man or Air Man first. I think I'll try to get through Quick Man's stage without using the timestop so that I can defeat Quick Man Dio Brando style.
if you ever wish to play and someone has a VIP shell account to contribute, we may put up a Kaillera server. Kaillera is a client for netplay compatible with a fair amount of emulators (at least one per console):
and so on. We can play VIP games (such as NeoGeo legendary beat'em ups and such.) There's also a chat function to take care of which games to play and such. I think it also supports 2+ people multiplayer for the games that make use of that function.
I've been playing Metal Slug X in co-op with a fellow non-VIPPER and it was quite a VIP experience.
Hasn't kaillera been abandoned for like 7 years? Is it actually playable?
>>11 It's very playable. I too have played Metal Slug games with it with general great success.
Wouldn't a nerd with a static IP (or dyndns) and a spare box running 24/7 be enough for a server? At least half of us must fit this stereotype.
I don't really think it's necessary to create a server. There are really endless servers on Kaillera that pretty much no one uses.
I did not know Metal Slug X was able to be played with other people on the computer.
I did not know Metal Slug X was able to be played with other people on the computer over the internet.
This sounds like a very enjoyable thing to do.
I buy alot of game tapes

I am interested in this and i would wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Oh, I see they're both windows-only.

What.
You can run almost any windows app on another operating system nowadays.
>>21
Can you tell me how to install a .MSI file on Leopard?
ヽ(゜へ゜)ノ
>>22
Parallels, Vmware, or Wine. To go the wine route, Crossover is the easy solution. It's faster but less compatible. Vmware and Parallels are evenly matched in terms of quality and their speed depends mostly on what programs you want to run.
>>23
You didn't answer my question. You assume I have an Intel processor.
ヽ(゜へ゜)ノ
And yet! This is a great boon to my video game world, and so I will find a way. I will find a way. Thank you, VIPPERs.
>>25
There is some ways to emulate windows desktops in tiger, I just dont recall how and that was the first link in google.
I'm not >>22, but I've not tried Wine/Crossover. VMware crashes very easily from my experience, and Parallels works fairly well on older games although some glitches occur. Coherence mode sometimes fixes the glitches, but not always.
Booting to Windows with Bootcamp is the best bet, however that not possible for >>22.
Just my two cents.
Justbreed for Famicom is a great strategy game that is better than the Shining Force games on Sega consoles!
Never played Justbreed, or the Sega Shinging Force games, but I enjoyed the hell out of the GBA Shining Force.
I'll have to check those out.
I played Shining Force 1 and 2 off of this bargain bin Sega game collection for the PC. Good stuff.
>>29
Hang on, SF3 on Sega Saturn is just.... amazing. I must play this game to see if you are right!
I've only played the Shining Force series. How are the other SHining games, like Shining Tears and Shining Soul?
>>39
Don't worry, VIPPER. I missed the early stationary consoles too, because my Father (bless him for that) got ma a game boy when I was around 10, and up to GBA my life was consumed by hand-helds.
>>39
Were you not around for it or you just don't enjoy the games?
I finished Earthbound.
I was delighted.
>>41
I was around for it, trust me. I just did not begin appreciating games until the 5th generation. :(
>>42
Pre-NES console gaming isn't all that great. Pre-NES arcade gaming on the other hand, that was pretty awesome.

Memories of the Original Game Boy
I nostalgia'd like mad.
lol, I'm guilty of at least half of those. Nostalgia... Heh, back then I was virtually attatched to the damned thing. Can't say that about either the DS or PSP... Not to say the DS and PSP aren't fun, just no one near as fun as the ol' GB.
Atari 2600 Reactor was great.
I had fun playing the Atari 2600, but I played it after I had an NES so I don't think I really appreciated it.

I had a yellow Game Boy Pocket as a kid, and I remember getting really mad at Pokemon one time and headbutting it because I'd accidentally killed the Dugtrio I was trying to catch.
I broke the screen but I could still play on about 1/4th of it, so I walked around until I found another Dugtrio, caught it, and saved the game. Ended up getting a used, but awesome silver GBP to replace it.
When I had a GameBoy (Colour), I met that guy when I was on summer break, and it was while the whole war on terror thing began, and I was shocked that he was cheering for binLaden. He was from Arabia or something. Anyway, he was rubbing sand on his GameBoy screen, because he said he liked the worn down look. Then, when one day we were sitting on a log, I was playing a Smurfs game (a level called Asia, I distinctly remember), and he was rubbing the damn sand in the screen, and then I heard something crack, and his GameBoy was broken.
