Hello, VIPPER!
Those of you that read the posts in the bump thread should remember a few posts talking about a folk studies project covering the anonymous culture of SAoVQ.
If not, here is an overview: I am doing a project observing the various folk aspects of SAoVQ; lore, traditions, etc.
Well, this thread is for the purpose of me asking questions relating to the folk culture of the AREA, and asking VIPPER for their input.
My first question: Why do you feel anonymity is important on this board?
Attention-whore-ism is rampant throughout the rest of the internet. More than that,the focus of a discussion board is to discuss, not flaunt some imagined form of status, rank, or whatever. In a sense, anonymity almost creates a sense of egalitarianism.
By the way, have you read Shii's treatise on anonymity?

You shouldn't start by assuming we feel that way!
In fact, you don't feel that way yourself: you chose to use a limited use handle to make it more convenient to identify who's talking.
There are a few overlapping groups of users who know each other through stable identities : the IRC channel, the Steam group, the Minecraft server, some guys on Twitter, the creative projects. The messageboard is no longer all of SAoVQ. But of course, there are also people who choose not to interact with VIPPER with an identity, at all.
I think not using names unnecessarily is a cultural norm we do not challenge because we like the side effects. It's a pressure-free environment. Not a license to be a bad poster, just giving you the chance to say things, disown them immediately, and forget you said them.

I actually meant to address this; even though users (such as myself in this thread) sometimes use a monicker or a tripcode, it generally is only in one thread. I, for one, will never use this tripcode outside of this thread, unless I'm being absent minded and forget to clear the name field. The only exceptions that come to mind are some of the artists on the VIPTRONIC projects and (・з・).
The users that use Minecraft (I used to play on the SAoVQ server, however, I haven't touched it in a while) probably only use that name in Minecraft; they don't return to the board and use that as their posting name. Even further, some people on Minecraft were simply named VIPPER, or if it was already claimed a simple variation of VIPPER.
I don't play PC games, so I don't use Steam, and I never was into IRC very much so I've never used the channel.
I completely agree with what you said about the pressure-free environment, but I agree with >>3 in that anonymity helps to shift focus from identity to the post's content; since there is no other way to judge an anonymous user's post (with their being no username, no avatar, no signature, no "date-joined", no post count), it must be judged on its content and content alone.
Allow me to add this to my previous post:
How does VIPPER define the concept of "VIP Quality?" What makes something QUALITY and what makes something... "unVIP", if you will?

I've always seen the two used interchangeably; VIPPER can refer to one or the whole. Just because it doesn't end in "s" doesn't mean it can't be a plural word!
And besides, VIPPER is a collective term. Collectivity, at least in my opinion, is important to SAoVQ.

When you see something that is VIP, you will know immediately. It's a feeling you get deep in your heart. You should never have to ask yourself "Is this VIP?" If you do, then it's not VIP QUALITY.

Metadiscussion is like a drug that you can get from Daddy Cool in a dark corner of SAoVQ if you pay him enough. We all recognize that it's bad news, but some give in to temptation and get addicted.
I've always been worried that if I think too much about SAoVQ then it will go away.
You should just talk about table cat and how awesome he is.
Also, make sure to write about the table and it's pristine quality that makes the table shine brighter than any other table under the moonlight.
And Don't forget to talk about the COOL FREE RINGTONES and Bible Black!

I am a lazy college student, and so this is getting finished at a lazy college student's pace, I'm afraid...
And to each VIPPER who disapproves of this thread, I'm sorry, and I understand.
Although, even those posts profaning this project actually help me in the long run, so thanks for participating!
I would just like to say that the paper itself is working much more smoothly than the emulated interview, and I only did it because it was a requirement for the assignment, so I'm not taking it too seriously... in fact, I may not even need to ask another question. If that is the case, this thread may peacefully sink to the bottom of SAoVQ to never be heard from again.
I just want to pass my course (;´･ω･)
