I agree. As a regular visitor of boards like /po/, /hr/ and /wg/, I am often insulted by ignorance of people that assume that 4chan is /b/ and nothing more. That makes admitting to visiting 4chan rather awkward, as people would assume that I am an anti-Scientology, meme-spewing, mercenary or something akin to this.
Another problem is the "member osmosis" between /b/ and some peaceful boards. Once, browsing the Internet at a rather exposed computer, I wished to check /po/ for new models, but I was not prepared to see a picture of a harlot with two ebony phalli in her anus and vagina. One can sometimes even happen upon Child Pornography (no, paedophiles, do not scrounge /po/ now, such imagery is promptly deleted).
I cannot address the matter of /r9k/, since I left it not long after its wake. But a quick peek reveals that I am not satisfied with the quality of the posts. I can see that they use /b/ lingo in there; abhorrent!
The one resolution to this problem is what you have proposed: the separation. Yet not the separation of /b/ itself, but going back to separate text- and imageboards. Some of the /b/ users still visit other boards, and they would carry over their afflictions to the non-/b/ 4chan (for instance, /s/ and /x/ seem to be often visited by the, ahem, /b/-tards).
I'm going to meditate now, because the other solution seems to have escaped my mind.
