As I suggested in the DQN ELECTRONICS VOL 2010 album thread, let's make our own VIP Quality music release!
Any contribution is welcome, so long as it is VIP Quality, and created for this project. Multiple contributions are obviously welcome too.
Once we have enough tracks, or once everyone has lost interest, and no later than in exactly four months (a deadline will keep us motivated), we will distribute by torrent and direct download.
To contribute music or artwork you can post your work in this thread, or to keep it secret until the day of release, you can send it to dqn.dqn.lol@gmail.com .
We can use this thread to discuss what to do, what title we want to use, plan collaborations, etc.
In case we need a wiki, let's put our stuff here: http://tanasinn.info/wiki/Homegrown_VIPtronic_Album
To prove that I'll be somewhat reliable, I am the guy who packaged Title, who harassed the participants to send in their tracks, and who did the worst songs on it: rest assured that unless nobody participates, something will eventually get released.
Someone suggested we just use "Homegrown VIPtronic Album" as the title. Other ideas?
Also I am available to create a musical accompaniment for other people's quality singing and dramatic reading.
is this just going to be a second iteration of "Title"?
Title was kind of unentertaining
>>3
Title had to follow exactly some pretty boring and unstructured lyrics, it led to horrible filler. There's no such a requirement here so we can do whatever.
Hmm, this would give me a chance to finally mess around making songs. Too bad I know absolutely nothing about making custom VIP tracks.
>>5
Download Audacity, press the record button (red circle) to start recording. Press stop (black square) once done. Export as MP3. VIP ensues.
I'd love to help, but I don't have much musical experience and I don't want to be one of those annoying nerds who puts out "expermental" "noise" music using a pirated copy of Reason and the Wikipedia page on "syncopation."
Maybe I'll just upload a track of me sobbing in pidginized, highly-accented Japanese about how I don't have any talent and nobody loves me because I'm a "hikimori."
>>9
You could do a parody of experimental noise. Record yourself sobbing in pidginized, highly-accented Japanese about how you don't have any talent and nobody loves you because you're a "hikimori", then open it in audacity and add echo and reverb, maybe change the pitch in a few places. And use lots of cheesy wah-wah.
We should call the album COOL FREE RINGTONES.
And we should have some of those on it.
I can't use the last word of the first sentence twice without triggering the spam filter for some reason.
>11
I also like this title.
>>11 I like this as well.
I have no clue what i'm doing but i'm going to try making something anyway.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QATJMQWJ
I thought it'd be a good idea to put my cat on my keyboard and things just went downhill from there.
>>6
I know that much, but I meant about doing COOL VIP REMIXES with custom music, not singing.
I'm not a musician, but I figured "ah what the hell" and ripped an old 12" single and made a cool drum loop from it. But now I don't know what to do with it!i@ίDί)
Speed it up to 300BPM and throw some anime samples over it. You too can be m1dy.
I don't know what I'm going to do for this project yet, but I'm going to do something. Something VIP.
That's the spirit, gents!
I have a few ideas too. One of them involves AM2 games, it doesn't get more VIP than this.
> Is there a deadline for this?
In the first post I gave the figure of 4 months. If you guys insist it be done sooner or later than that of course.
(I just realized that four months after 08-23 means it'll be packaged exactly for christmas.)
Do we expect enough participation to have a limit?
Unless your tracks suck horribly in non-VIP ways, many of them would be welcome.
(Feel free to use different artist names on each to simulate the existence of a grandiose VIP collective.)
Also how about we make a few 10~20 sec. ring tones?
i'm starting this weekend and i'm so excited
I'm gonna screw around in Renoise and hope that I come up with something quality.
I don't plan on submitting anything, but I'll fiddle around with Fruity Loops and Garageband and see what comes up. I have no musical tallent whatsoever.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?millghkjnno
I have made a ringtone.
Unless you want oldschool MIDI ring tones, in which case I will make one of those instead.
>>28
Is it COOL? Is it FREE?
Maybe we can make it a double release with a COOL FREE RINGTόNES BONUS CD and whatever the VIPtronic part is to be called.
And if you guys don't mind, maybe the ringt◦nes could be stripped of their names (RINGTόNE 1, RINGTόNE 2) to keep the surprise about their contents. Tell me if you mind of course!
>>15
What is the artist name of your cat? Should the track be simply labelled as made by "VIPPER"?
(I feel like we're gonna trigger the anti-spam filters often ITT)
>>29
I had it tagged as "VIPPER and Microsoft Sam feat. A cat"
I think he would prefer to remain anonymous, but for the record, his name is actually Longcat.
Just downloaded Audacity as a portable app, and will be working on something for the VIPtronic album.
>>32
Hey, there was a time when longcat was actually quite VIP. Let's just remember that time. However, if his cat isn't at least 3 years old it can stay anonymous, w.
>>34
He is actually three years old this year. He's not really a long cat anymore though. He was the runt of the litter and we feed him well so he's really a disproportionate cat.
I was going to try and take some samples this weekend but alas I had no time orz
How do I find time to make music VIPPERs?
>>40
A huge green fierce snake bars your way. Frightened, you spill your tea.
>_
I will work on something. No guarantee I will finish, but I have a lot of time to think while I'm in Corea.
Look out for a track by 'BENOIST!!'
>>44
QUALITY Audio to mangle is all around you. Two ideas: http://www.listentoyoutube.com/
http://www.archive.org/details/audio
> MSSam
let's not do title all over again
Yay, participation!
I've started working on two different songs, one is about tanasinn, and the other about SEGA (and cars); and on 4~8 ringt0nes made mostly of stolen material.
If it's ready for christmas (I'll see what you guys prefer before setting a release date), how about a big run-on title such as: "Homegrown VIPtronic records presents: COOL FREE RINGTONES ~Christmas Special Edition~"?
We could have some VIP christmas carols too.
Composing music for VIPPERs sounds interesting, I may give it a jolly good go!
I can contribute boring and mostly repetitive chiptunes that I've made in Modplug. There's a few VIP Quality ones that I've made too, but they're from when I first started with Modplug, when I actually put effort in; nothing recent, sadly.
Any VIPPER's interested, anyway?
>>52 again. I've started on a new chiptune. Trying my best to make sure it's up to SAoVQ standards for the album.
So yea, add me to list or whatever.
I do believe an introductory track featuring daddycool himself is in order.
Me and my band have decided to do a cover of the Burning Rangers theme song for this compilation. We're going to meet up on the 25th of September to record it and a bunch of other stuff.
It'll be really lo-fi though, all I've got is a Dictaphone to record it on. I hope you guys don't mind.
Actually, scratch that bit about the Dictaphone. I think we'll be able to use my friend's laptop,
You just dethroned the dictaphone. You hit it in its funny bone, after all, thats where it expects it least.
I actually like recording stuff on the dictaphone, but then I like lo-fi music. My friends aren't so much into it.
I think this thread needs a bump.
Sadly I have nothing to post yet. I think I might do a Giorgio Moroder-style Italiadisco track with lots of vocoder and quality synth sounds.
Let's start by including already created music.
http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/3020.html
http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/870.html
http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/1066.html
I have just found out that the library here at this university has a fucking professional quality sound studio that can be used by students.
BRB MAKIN MUSICS
Why not make two versions? Use the Dictaphone and the laptop?
VIPPER-TRONIC... ELECTRONIC
Zlad needs to make more music. Someone should mix Supersonic or Antipope into a VIP Quality track.
Thats not to say Supersonic or Antipope are not already VIP Quality tracks.
I want to kickstart participation in this thing but I can't ;_;
I wish I were not away from my music-making computer for a few more weeks. Without her four powerful cores, her multiple displays, her manly speakers, and her large master keyboard, I feel emasculated. I'd warez Fruity Loops or Mario Paint on my tiny laptop, but it would feel like cheating her with a cheap whore.
>>69
I would be sufficiently content with just switching SUPERSONIK lyric to VIPPER-TRONIK
http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/4918.html#i5077
Never let me near a Kaossilator ever again.
I still can't seem to get a decent track together.
Feckin' lack of inspiration.
Oooooh. I'll make something for this.
I'll go make some VIP-quality splittercore or something.
Probably something better than this:
http://www.djzovi.com/zovi/Obligatory%20Archetypical%20Tsundere.mp3
http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/Michigan%20D.%20Ghost%20-%20Jazzroom%20Conniption.ogg
Fackin' big panic attack.
>>79
Well, it is very COOL. I hope the artist responsible won't mind.
submitted two songs!
I can't wait to see how this turns out.
Well received!
Sorry for being silent and having not posted anything yet, I had an acute case of real life recently ;_;
I'll make sure to post my own contributions (and start organizing other people's!) ASAP.
I think I might work on improving the one with the misleading title. I just listened to it again and it does need work...
Finally finished something!
But it's not music, it's... well, it's an audio adventure.
It will convey 0.033333333333333333333334% of the experience of going inside the tanasinn chamber.
It's pretty long because it's a challenge, which very few will find the need to attempt twice.
http://tindeck.com/listen/odpy
I'll also contribute actual music that don't (intentionally) hurt to listen at, I promise!
But .03% of the tanasinn chamber can kill a man of weak will! I'm not sure I can handle it...
Me and another vipper are planning to do something with shouting in the car whenever it is we can get a means of making a digital recording of the process.
Since the SAOVP thread no longer bumps, I will crosspost here what I wrote, so people won't miss it forcing me to re-encode:
> I am already starting to package the release. Things are looking pretty good, with some secret submissions I received by e-mail!
> May I request that everyone who uploaded a .OGG file for the release make a .MP3 version? You can zip it and upload it here, or send it directly to dqn.dqn.lol on gmail
>
> I made this (http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1259153931831.jpg) for the cover art. Hope you guys will like it.
> (from http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/4918.html)
Here is an annoyingly obnoxious bump that merely reiterates that your submissions are needed in MP3 format, please.
ok, ok.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/sp90k1
And here is mine.
I've completed a track! I did it in Renoise, and I was going for a DJ Sharpnel sound. It ended up pretty bass-y, but I like how it turned out. I hope it suits your VIP tastes!
I posted the zipped .mp3 in the SAoVP thread.
>>97
Good work, VIPPER.
Some thoughts, that lead at 1:47 is really loud in contrast to the rest of the track and the kick on the other hand should be mixed louder (mids/highs at least.)
>>98
Thanks very much for your input, I'm very new to making music. I'll do a little revising and post it as soon as I'm able.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/jb84us
Here's two mp3 tracks I posted in that other thread in .ogg format ages ago.
Thanks!
(Still finishing secret tracks of listenable quality for a Christmas release - it's not too late to submit more!)
http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/COOL%20FREE%20MITTONE.zip
COOL FREE MITTONE stage 2 (208 bpm)
Real life (and procrastination) helping, I'd like to report the release by a week to make it coincide with the new year. Since the music isn't Christmas-themed in the first place I hope you guys won't mind too much.
It's still possible to release tomorrow but I'd rather take the time to make the overall QUALITY higher.
Would that be OK?
Apologies regardless of the VIPPER's choice.
Need to definitely make sure this album is definitely of VIP quality.
Go for it. I'm curious though...how many tracks does this thing have?! It seems like this is going to be one large zip!
Well, it will be for the new year then.
>>106
Lots, large.
Does the album have any cover art?
There is still some time to offer something VIP-ER, VIPPER.
(And there's also a bonus COOL FREE RINGTONES bonus cd that has no artwork yet too)
>>112
I asked a famous VIP EXPERT to identify which one was better, but he also suggested to ask some more VIPPERS, so here we go:
http://exehost.webege.com/img/src/1262035507536.png
or
http://exehost.webege.com/img/src/1262035538497.gif
or
something completely different?
for the COOL FREE RINGTONES I'll try to cook something utterly different tomorrow (I hope.)
Hey it's >>97. My hard drive started to fail the day after I posted my creation. I've been trying to salvage things off of it, but I haven't had any success. As such, I don't think I'll be able to post a revised version of my track. I'll keep trying but I doubt I'll be able to recover it before the deadline if I am able to recover it at all. You don't need to include my submission if you don't think it's up to snuff. Also, if anyone thinks they can mix my track into something more QUALITY, then please feel free.
>>114
I don't really get it. I think the photo was better, it had personality and looked homegrown.
I agree with >>116, especially since it has a pun (homeGROWN, flower pot, etc).
Whatever we use, I think we shouldn't have any explicit or easily googlable reference to SAoVQ, so we won't have to avoid sharing it to protect our Quality.
I planned to edit the photo to add a few things (like a sticker advertising the BONUS RINGTONES CD LIMITED ONE TIME OFFER) and to make a tracklist in the same way as the photo, so if someone else prefers to do the cover, please decide quickly and consider providing a PSD I can edit with the final tracklist.
Besides the author and maybe >>118, anyone wants one of the pictures in >>114 to be the official cover?
Same if someone wants to do cover art for COOL FREE RINGTONES (for which I have done nothing yet).
Its tracklist is RINGTONE 1, RINGTONE 2, and so on, but I don't know how many there will be yet, so it should be editable.
another ringtone...for some reason I fail at posting on the imageboard.
>>114 here
nevermind, I'll reuse the image for something in the future. I have no current ideas for COOL FREE RINGTONES.
maybe I'll make up something quick tonight, involving taking a picture of my cell phone and screwing with it and overlaying it with some pretty text in InDesign.
I did exactly what I described.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2981/cfr.png
I have the psd if you think it's good enough. Anything to add?
Also, apparently naming it c o o l f r e e r i n g t o n e s . p n g set off the spam filter.
P R E T T Y C O O L
Then I could do a reverse side with the tracklist in the same theme using my HipsterPhone
I'm on the edge of my chair waiting for this to finally be released. VIPPER sure knows how to work some suspense.
It's a matter of less than 24 hours now! Or maybe less than one hour!
Me too. I hope GENOCIDE BY BOOMERANGS didn't disappear in the storm of new year celebrations.
I didn't, however some inebriated annoyances came over to my house without my consent and demanded I celebrate some sort of change of decade kinda deal, squandering precious hours in the process.
I want to make my tracks suck slightly less before I unleash them upon you all, please. I should be still Jan 1st in SAoVQ's timezone when I post it.
Still working on stuff.
So, with tpb going trackerless and mininova dead, where is the best place to upload a torrent nowadays?
Fapis would be nice considering the DQN albums are all there too.
Ahh I can't believe I totally missed this collaboration! The result was awesome, and I hope there's another album so I can contribute something
>>134
Or you can just release your stuff here in this thread: http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/5967.html
Or you can just put together a self-released EP.
I had a similar "when's the next one" reaction from a participant in the mail.
Now that we know that there's some eager talent around, maybe we could make this a semi-regular thing, but I'm afraid people might get bored of it very quickly... I dunno, what do you VIPPERs think?
Considering it took 4 months to put this one together, it's not like it's going to be very often that we release one. I say very yes.
I think semi-regular releases would be cool. I hope it wouldn't be too much trouble for GENOCIDE BY BOOMERANGS.
For anybody who plays Stepmania here, I have made a simfile for the guided tour of the tanasinn chamber. I recommend 2x or 3x, as it is an xmod file.
http://www.mediafire.com/?zzymyofmgfo
As this simfile attempts to be the closest thing humanly possible to making steps for tanasinn, only VIPPERS with extreme levels of tanasinn will be able to pass this. I would suggest FailOff.
> I hope it wouldn't be too much trouble for GENOCIDE BY BOOMERANGS.
It wouldn't (not that there's any particular need for me to be the organizer). So, should we get ready for FOUR MORE MONTHS?
>>139
Oh god lol http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3307/53296697.png
Well, since there is some interest, let's do it again the same way!
Let's try to do a new album for sometime between April 1st and May 1st.
If we're considering making it a series like DQN ELECTRONICS, we could come up with something to tack on the beginning or end of "Homegrown VIPtronic Album", like "Another Homegrown VIPtronic Album".
...
I don't know, I'd like to keep the word "VIPtronic" somehow. It's a cool word.
I just realized that I forgot to include a ringtone that was posted only on the wiki. Apoligies to Acostoss.
My friend and I are planning on getting together a track. It will be simple, and it may not even be good...
But it's the thought that counts, right?
I suspect I have mistagged a lot of things and made a lot of mistakes by trying to be "helpful": I apologize to anyone who got his artist name retagged to VIPPER if I shouldn't have.
So please include with your submissions all the following so that I won't get stuff wrong again:
> A simple message indicating that your post is indeed a submission of your original content to the album
> How the track title must appear in the release
> Which artist name must be used. "VIPPER" is the default choice for anonymous submissions.
>>144
Of course, the barrier to entry is just meant to avoid having the "these are eight minutes filled with two chords and a drum loop" kind of submissions. Ideally everything sent gets included.
>>145
I don't plan on it being much longer than a minute, so hopefully it will get accepted!
I updated the wiki page.
(sage not used because it might be helpful.)
>>142
Maybe we could continue the series with different adjectives than Homegrown then.
Stonethrown?
OVERGROWN
Glassblown.
Well anyway, I made a song for this already. It's incredibly obnoxious, but somehow catchy. I tried to make it simulate the rush you get when you are VIPPING...or perhaps a shot of caffeine in the morning. Or both.
http://www.djzovi.com/zovi/THIS%20SONG%20IS%20INCREDIBLY%20OBNOXIOUS.mp3
I am going to try to compose a piece of "music" for this, and it will be the first time in my life I do that!
>>155
I DON'T SEE ANYTHING OBNOXIOUS ABOUT IT!!

We're making unhelpful software recommendations on the wiki if you care: http://tanasinn.info/wiki/VIP_music_software . Good luck!
Excellent. Be prepared to hear awesome shit-tastic music from yours truly!
I couldn't stop fucking around with 'Audiotool', pretty impressive for something built in flash.
I just got into tracking and I'm having a blast! ^O^
Well I made this for my girlfriend but I think VIPPER should hear it as well.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W5Q2OD5F
_aNΜVIP`ΰ - VIPPER - Viptronic 2
Daddycool no VIP Densetsu was a game released in 1985, only available in Korea for the all-original Samsung-Nida Entertainment System. It sold exactly one copy, mostly because the game cost more than most Koreans make in a lifetime, and could only be paid for in VIPCOINS, which weren't available in Korea until the mid-'90s. The plot involved Daddycool on his quest to found the Secret Area of VIP Quality, facing enemies such as horses and JEWS, while rescuing friendly lumberjacks in each level.
This is the title screen and first level music.
Now hopefully I don't screw up this post again.
>>168
Sure, what the fuck, I'll call it a submission. The metadata is correct.
I'm working on a submission as well. Here's hoping I actually finish it before the album fills up.
I'm probably going to submit something better than that "incredibly obnoxious" song. Probably like...actual trancecore. I'll probably end up making it next week sometime....
If we get overenthusiastic we can change the deadline anyway
I like the deadline at the moment, at least for myself. As I have never actually made music before and have no talent whatsoever, it gives me enough time to figure out how to use software and be able to maybe produce something decent by the time we put the album together.
Another submission?! Yes! Sorry if I'm becoming a nuisance.
evelyn - It's Fucking Cold In Russia (seriously)
http://www.mediafire.com/?nzjqujjgmgb
I was randomly watching videos on youtube then suddenly this happened
VIPPERsaurus flex - John Goodman really likes triangles
http://www.sendspace.com/file/o8klhv
>>178
The tags on the mp3 itself say it's VIPPER - John Goodman really loves triangles. Which is more correct?
I was originally just gonna be VIPPER but I came up with VIPPERsaurus flex as I was posting that so go with that.
This album looks like it's going to have even more VIP quality than the last one!
So I sent this into Genocide for a "secret" submission but screw it, I'll just post it here too. It's a gabber/trancecore song, and not absolute shit like ARARARARARARARARARARARARARARARAGI-SAN or that other song I submitted earlier for the second one that I am now retracting due to stupidity.
DJ Zovi - D A D D Y C O R E
http://www.djzovi.com/zovi/daddycore-v1.mp3
...I figured out it also sounds good as a nearly-10-minute-long 135 BPM tech house track (genre?) of sorts. Still 320 CBR mp3 so it's a hefty 23 MB. Whatever.
http://www.djzovi.com/zovi/daddytech.mp3
Also this ISN'T A SUBMISSION it's just something extra~
...this is moving too far down the thread list. Needs a bump, even if this is a triple post.
Anyways, I made another song. This'll be my last submission to this VIPtronic album I suppose. It's splittercore.
DJ Zovi - Bu-n Like a VIPPER (MIKU SPLITTERCORE MIX)
http://www.djzovi.com/zovi/bu-nlikeavipper-v2.mp3
I noticed this two. Luckily I have a song I made recently and a collaboration I did ages ago but both parties completely forgot about which I can post tomorrow.
But for now, bed!
A day late but here they are:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/wnm281
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9f9jic
I have a submission. It's another minimalist thing made with LMMS.
http://www.mediafire.com/?3uygj03tyyz
Is this still going?
It better be. If Genocide doesn't want to continue it, I'll produce myself unless someone better suited wants to. I want to see this happen because people have submitted cool VIP music already and I'd hate to see it go to waste.
Well, I'm always around, but I think I won't be able to submit anything if we stick with the May 1st deadline.
We can either have me package what we have for May 1st, wait about one more month for submissions (including mine-sorry), or have someone else take over packaging responsibility this time around. What do you guys prefer?
Taken that a June 1st release would be exactly half a year after our last release, it would actually make a lot more sense. I don't mind waiting, as long as it does in fact get packaged.
If anybody minds the wait I'll reconsider, but otherwise I think having these two months instead of one will allow us to make have an album-length and -quality release. As I'm sure I've said earlier, you guys should feel free to take over the project if you don't like how I manage (or in this case, do not) things or if you suspect I have gone AWOL (not that I plan to).
sorry for the involuntary bump.
I approve of the June release.
I'll try to give some of the several tracks I've been working on before May 1st.
BENOISTΕ·B
I also approve of the June release. Hopefully I will stop aborting tracks and finish one by then.
I've got some things I'm working on that probably would be fitted to work out on June a bit easier.
lol locked groove
I have a MIDI that I can't seem to convert to mp3 without major issues. I hope some good soul can help me, else I'm going to upload it "as is" and it will be up to the Album Maker to convert it the right way m(_ _)m
Audacity?
Or how about http://www.hamienet.com/midi2mp3 ?
>>199
How should the metadata be formatted ?
Trackname: jewslockedgroove
Artist: BENOIST
If you don't reply, I'll assume the title is meant to be changed to "JEWS (locked groove)"
>>201
Same thing. Please confirm:
Trackname: The Ghost of Cubone's Mother
Artist: Captain Carlin
>>202
Upload it or e-mail it to me and I'll run it through my best sound sources.
>>204
I sent the midi to you.
We're gonna have a few songs tying into a cars/hitting the road/racing theme, and also some in a retro videogames theme.
(Partly by my fault in both cases, actually)
Should we acknowledge either? Both? None? And in any case, a better idea than "VIPTRONIC 2" or the titles that were recommended months ago without bringing many enthusiastic reactions?
Reminder: It is not too late to participate.
See >>141 for the rules and details.
Please try to send your submissions before May 27th. The project will be released on June 1st as a torrent, mediafire/rapidshare download, and long-term direct download mirror.

http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/hillbillyhellhole.zip
I have made a cover with >>219's title, since everybody seems to like it (hosting on a separate server to avoid "spoiling" VIPPERs who don't want to follow the project until it's done)
http://imgur.com/z9DP9.jpg
What do you think?
Neither the title nor the cover are frozen, of course. If you have a better idea or something better to offer, let us know ASAP.

That'll work. I'll see what I can make with a competent music-making program if I have time as well.
>>222
Very nice.
Even though I'm tempted, I'll leave D A D D Y C O R E as my only submission, seeing that it's like 7 minutes long.
If I'm not too tired tonight I'm thinking of doing a track for this.
Then again, I've been saying that since the first DQN Electronics.
>>227
:3
But yes, again it did not happen. I feel asleep and the producer was out.
But it shall, it shall. I'm just always worried about how well it will mesh with the other tracks on the album considering I make music "professionally" and it will probably sound way different than everything else and possibly not as QUALITY if you know what i'm sayin.
>>228
How many years of experience do you have? I just recently started messing around with trackers and synths, and I'd like to do something for the next album.
I play cello; but when it comes to composing... how do you learn that?
>>229
You keep making tracks and trashing them until you make one that's acceptable.
>>228
Everything already sounds way different from everything else! You could take this as an opportunity to do things way differently than usual, or add some sort of challenge to the process.
Our low requirements and vague theme are mostly an invitation for VIPPERs who never make music to attempt it anyways, so nobody seems to think of it as a competition anyway.
> when it comes to composing... how do you learn that?
Start by arranging random notes of a specific scale in pretty geometric patterns on the grid, modify until you like it.
Figure out or read about a handful of new tricks then make a new song, using those tricks when you feel like they work for you. Repeat.
We have a (needlessly nerdy) linkdump about our favorite music software on the tanasinn.info wiki, and I totally urge you not to think and feel and download one of them and do some loud noises : http://tanasinn.info/wiki/VIP_music_software
>>233
Thanks for the info, I've already got a bunch of the softwares, Renoise is prolly my favorite so far. Guess it's just a matter of practice until I can make something worth listening to.
How much time do I have left to make some beeps and boops on a recording?
> Please try to send your submissions before May 27th. The project will be released on June 1st as a torrent, mediafire/rapidshare download, and long-term direct download mirror.
Maybe I'll have the opportunity (and determination) to assault the inevitable next one with my sonic VIPwaves. Until then I'll be enjoying others' productions!
I realized I'd put it off longer than long enough, so I just now threw this together in MilkyTracker. Hand-drawn samples (except the white noise, but nobody cares about white noise). Mrowr. Hope it's not too late.

Actually, if someone wants to send stuff late, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But if you have not sent it by the 29th, then make sure to send me a mail or post here to tell me that I should wait a few more hours before finalizing the files.

He definitely is, we confirmed it in a secret shadowy meeting (by which I mean bumping into him at random on the minecraft server).

You're just jealous you can't compose such a masterpiece as ARARARARARARARARARARARARARARARARAGI-SAN, with it's brilliant minimalist and italian post-expressionist undertones. Philistine.
Anybody with an OK voice and a decent mic cares to attempt to replace vocals that are currently badly vocaloid'd?
Of course, it would have to be done today or tomorrow.
The part should be stupidly easy to sing if unlike me you can sing at all. Reply with your mail or send me a mail to dqn.dqn.lol@gmail.com, I'll send you the current files and lyrics.
Thanks for the offer! I sent a reply with explanations and a link to a pack of files you'll need.
I'm so excited to partake in some great audio-based VIP QUALITY tomorrow!
Seems like >>250 didn't notice we'd release today and hoped to do it this week-end, but might try, told me so just now... If anyone else wanna try a last-minute recording let me know. I guess I'll attempt something or axe the song, I'd rather not push back the date again.
Wait... actually, let's not discard the idea yet. Would anybody who has not participated would do so if we added one more week to work on stuff? I'd feel less bad about being the one who made the release late twice.
Why rush things? There will be another album right?
I vote for keeping the deadline.
I'd like to say I'll contribute a song if you delay the release, but I'm not sure if it'll be good enough for my – or anyone else's – approval. I can sure as hell try, though.
Of course everyone is eager to enjoy the finished product, but taking as much time as possible to improve it will not only ensure quality, but also artificially increase each individual album's worth. (Taken directly from Blizzard's company bible)
We should delay the release every week, and rename it Tabitha "Tablecat" Catherine's Super Off-Table Formula VIP Nukem Forever
I can contribute one or two tracks if given a few days.
I'd contribute, but I'm too lazy.
I agree with >>255. If people rush making music so last minute and don't give themselves time to make it truly VIP, it might not have as much VIP QUALITY as it would if it were just submitted for the third VIPtronic album. Just a thought...and also, it's good to stick to deadlines.
I, too, agree with >>255. If we don't stick to deadlines, I might actually have something read for VIPtronic Vol. 2, in December.
If there's not enough material, then by all means, extend the deadline, but otherwise, package it so that we may have more VIP QUALITY musics.
I'm still hoping for an "Unguided Tour of the Tanasinn Chamber"
All right then. We'll get it packaged today, hopefully before 23:59 SAoVQ time.
Damn... the links in >>177,178,187 have gone cold... I should still have the files on storage somewhere, but I won't be able to confirm I have the right files/tags/version...
Really sorry about dropping the ball like this repeatedly near the end but... If the original uploaders see this message, please reupload or send them.

I think Genocide's still trying to get it out by 23:59 SAoVQ time, though. Godspeed to you and your VIPtronic work, VIPPER.
I am... but unfortunately my file sorting strategy is mostly "rename the downloads folder to downloads-YYYY-MM whenever it exceeds 10GB" and I am currently being proved that it does not work very well.
If I suspect I am missing one file, I will delay finalizing the release until 23:00, but I arranged to have the whole day (well, night for me) available so I'm finishing other things in the mean time (mostly working on a song I'd rather not axe for low quality)

>>272
Thanks, that helps.
Actually the real problems are:
I hate the sound of autotune almost as much as that of my own voice, but I'm giving up... That's the only way the song can get on the album on time...
>>275
Unfortunately that barely helped. Maybe people will find the results less embarrassing than I do.
Anyway, I know for sure I am missing one of the submissions by evelyn. Sorry ;_;
I say we might as well just release what we have now and then make super sure the missing stuff goes on the third album.
>>277
I was hoping to wait for people to forget my screw-ups before that!
But anyway, I'm game, as organizer or as participant. Given it took us 6 months, should we set the same (firm and unmovable) deadline, 2011-01-01?
>>279
I think that'll keep this from moving an endless number of one-more-weeks backwards.
>I make music "professionally" and it will probably sound way different than everything else and possibly not as QUALITY if you know what i'm sayin.
I'm curious if you ever submitted a track, and if so which one. None of the tracks really stands out to me as being significantly better or worse than the others, they all sound VIP QUALITY to me!
VIPtronic on vinyl: A possibility?
>>283
I am quite on board with this, after an interesting discussion about how this is actually somehow possible.
>>284
The situation as far as I can tell: Average price for a minimum of 100 units of 12-inch vinyl is around $900 plus S/H. A better idea of what would be on the album would be required to get a more accurate quote, but that's all I have to go on thus far.
Basically, the process would go:
I'd like to add that this album cannot be more than 36 minutes (18 minutes on each side) so it'd have to be a more exclusive selection of music (meaning more VIP QUALITY per track because people will really put a lot of VIP QUALITY EFFORT into them?), and perhaps a collaboration with another related community to make it viable is a possibility as well.
>>286
This. Perhaps something like the VIPtronic vs. DQN ELECTRONICS album suggested in the channel?
>>288
If we can get DQN ELECTRONICS people on board, then yes. We should work on scouting interest.
Since the selection would be more exclusive, I think it would be good to go for some collaborative tracks. That way you have two people ensuring the track's QUALITY and more people can be involved. And of course somebody should also master the album so it sounds even more VIP!
>>290
Are we talking self-mastering or professional mastering? Because if it's the latter, then the price increases by about $150 a side.
We definitely should try to use our own skills whenever possible. Volume leveling will be enough. We just need to...uh...do it this time, since it's more important to do it on something like this than on the Internet releases.
An additional point to note is that all samples have to be cleared. As of 2005, there is pretty much no such thing as fair use for samples. Nobody will press a record unless they get all the proper licensing and other legal stuff sorted.
Basically what this means is that sampling has to be kept to a minimum unless you want to pay licensing costs. :\
>>293
Or, at least, that's what some pressers say. Others just claim no legal liability. Either way, legal details will have to be settled beforehand if such a project gets off the ground.
>>283-294
First, note that I have not participated in the discussion you mentioned (I never use IRC).
I must quite bluntly say I am not very interested in making the VIPTRONIC project into a high-quality-standards, legally-clean, physically-released, money-involved kinda racket.
Of course, if other people want to make it happen, I have no reason to attempt to prevent it.
But let's review a few facts:
A. We had less than 100 downloads in two weeks.
This time, the torrent having accidentally been the only way to acquire the release, the stats are pretty accurate.
It's safe to assume the http mirrors had very few downloads, too.
Disregard entirely the fapis stats of the 1st homegrown viptronic album. It's almost only bots. I think it reported 300 "downloads" just in the last month.
I don't think we will find 100 vinly fetishists willing to drop money for this stuff.
B. If we remove illegal sampling and illegal covers (that are pretty much impossible to prosecute in free pseudonymous net releases) we'd axe tons of tracks from the previous releases.
For the last one, instances I either noticed or committed:
C. The point of this release in my opinion is just to have fun and get some people who don't usually record music to attempt to do so.
Forgot that wakabamark automatically "fixes" the numbers in lists. Disregard the numbers and use only the titles to know which song I refer to
>>295
Well, the general idea was to make something a little different from the regular VIPtronic albums. I recall suggesting at one point that this was to be a special release and not part of the main VIPtronic series, which are made "just to have fun" like you stated in C. What we were thinking of was a special one-time thing where we make something that will be enjoyed by VIPPERs for many generations.
The general idea was not to make a commercial release. Nobody intends to make a profit here. We just want to break even or get something a little close to that. We want to try to do something that will cause an exceptional piece of VIP QUALITY unlike any other before it, but it costs VIP COINS.
Now, I'd also like to point out that we were strongly considering the fact we wouldn't get 100 VIPPERs from SAoVQ to buy a VIPtronic vinyl. That's why we were going to reach out to communities with similar interests, like the ones suggested earlier (and especially DQN). If we do so, we'd have more of a shot at realistically doing this.
As for sampling, well, obviously we'd be making original tracks for this special album. The best VIP QUALITY is the kind made entirely from original material, no matter how much we love to copy and paste AA. I'd expect people to make an effort to record their own VIP vocals and collaborate in any way possible, because that's how VIPPERs operate.
We would have trashed the idea in IRC if we thought it wasn't entirely possible. I personally would love to see you in on this project as well, so don't think, feel, and you will be tanasinn.
Given that, like most people, listening to vinly requires hoping that my family's 60's hardware still works, I'm not very excited about it.
I also don't like the idea of drawing unnecessary attention to SAoVQ. But if this is going to happen, and if there's a a digital version of the release, then I'd definitely submit a quality (or at least, not half-assed) track.
I'll wait and see what you guys prefer to do for now.
We don't have to explicitly advertise that this is a product of SAoVQ...it's a product of VIP QUALITY. SAoVQ just happens to be a secret area of VIP QUALITY, and we don't have any obligation to direct people here. It'd have as much connection at the end as DQN ELECTRONICS releases (since they're on tanasinn.info), and those haven't ruined us or anything.
I see your misgivings, but hey, it'd be pretty VIP regardless. If nothing else, we'd have a lot of fun making something like this and feel an accomplishment as a VIP community that we were able to pull something as crazy as this off.
Once we make some contacts and try to think the specifics through more, it'll become more apparent if it's possible or not. I'm remaining optimistic.
>>295
>>298
As DJ Zovi has said, this would most likely require a collaborative effort with another community of VIP-minded individuals.
Secondly, with regards to sampling, not all pressers are so anal. Some of them just give a warning up front that the legal liability lies upon whomever is soliciting the order. If it came right down to it, I would be willing to accept some of the liability.
Since this release is likely to be fairly limited in number and pretty much limited only to those who would be willing to donate in advance, it wouldn't really be advertising SAoVQ. By the way, nobody would be making a profit off of this because there is really no profit to be made in vinyl; it's strictly a break-even operation.
I know something like this requires a great deal of effort, time, and such, but I think it would be awesome if we could have something on physical media to fill our ears with VIP QUALITY.
Just curious, how many VIPPERs have decent turntables? I'm a bit of an audiophile with about $10k in my speaker system, even have a tubed headphone amp, but vinyl seems like too much maintenance.
>>301
For most post-80s vinyl pressings, there's not a whole lot of maintenance required. Try not to scratch them up too badly, keep them out of extreme temperatures and store them upright.
I don't even own a turntable, but I'd still love to see this happen, if only for maintaining the legacy of VIP. I do DJ at a radio station that has a couple turntables, and I can assure you that I would give a VIP QUALITY album many plays (do'nT woRRY I wilL pAy dadDY CoOl EnouGH licenSINg feeEs. ;)) I would certainly contribute a track if this project gets off the ground.
I also agree that we shouldn't worry too much about sampling--a private pressing like this just wouldn't get enough attention for anybody to care, as long as the presser doesn't care.
I can't guarantee I'd end up contributing something, but if I did it'd be something I spent more than an hour and a half indiscriminately whipping together. I think it'd be way cool to have a VIP QUALITY vinyl, even if I hardly ever pull out my turntable.
Since you seem all interested, two questions:
Personally I'm against a digtial release. I feel this should be SAoVQ's counter to DQN Electronics 10.
>>305
>>306
The way I see it, if there's a digital release, and there really should be, then it would likely be slightly different from the physical release.
As for the project lead, I figured it could be more of a collaborative thing. Zovi has a lot of details involving contacting interesting persons and other such matters. I'm more of an idea guy.
But, I don't necessarily speak for the project as a whole.
I'll help lead the project if nobody has objections. I agree with >>306 but it'd be good to have a high-quality file backup ready for anybody who has the vinyl just in case they don't have the means to rip the vinyl to their computer to listen in a portable manner or whatever. It just wouldn't be public and it would be in the same level of secrecy as DQN ELECTRONICS VOL 10. Maybe a sampler would be cool, though, like a mixed 30-seconds-per-song file to give an idea of what's on it.
I just don't see the point. If we do something worth having, someone with a newfangled USB turntable will probably rip it and upload it, with the loss of quality analog->digital necessarily implies. Wouldn't it be better to preempt it with a quality full-digital release?
The digital version could be delayed from the physical product if we find it necessary to provide some incentive to buy the record.
If it's supposed to be some sort of collector item, the value isn't in the music itself anyway.
And if it's supposed to be a top secret release, that's kinda too late now that we've talked about it in public.
>The digital version could be delayed
This is actually pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking. But again, the digital release would probably be somewhat different from the physical release in order to (I guess) justify it.
>>311
Well, I was talking more in terms of something like locked grooves. Yes, you can rip the audio and then edit it to loop correctly, but it's not quite the same as playing it from the record.
Anyway, it's pretty much like you said, the value is mostly in the fact that it's on physical media. We want something tangible that VIPPERs can enjoy.
Or we could make the vinyl a special thing with some bonus tracks after a digital free release...there are a lot of possibilities. I like the idea of making the physical media version have something special like locked grooves, but I agree with BENOIST's saying that it doesn't matter that you can probably get it for free online. It's much better to have the physical version. That's why people still buy CDs even though they're ripped online...well, I do, anyway...
>>309 As far as I'm aware, no one's ripped and upped DQN Electronics 10, or else I'm not looking hard enough...
>>314
Even if nobody cares enough to rip something, what would be the point on working on such a project just to say to people "no, you can't have it"?
I don't think we were intending to make the tracks themselves secretive, as that would be a little...Elitist...
And elitists too! We have taken this conversation to private channels. E-mail GBB or another elitist to join in, but expect harsher quality standards than the all-inclusive normal VIPTRONIC releases.
These guys are serious, all of them have "MySpace Music" pages, and a couple even release quality shit for free every once in a while. Some of them have been featured in "J-Core" collections and I'm sure have made money off of their tuff beats.
I think the only artist on the VIPTRONIC album should be VIPPER--but I really do feel kind of disappointed sometimes when I download one of these albums to come out of DQN or SAOVQ and there's shit like 43 minutes of just samples of a dude saying "it's all about jesus" layered over each other repeatedly. I mean can anyone really even stand the crap mixtapes /jp/ comes up with?
Course they have lots of individuals there
The VIPtronic project for 2011-01-01 isn't canceled, so long as people still wish to participate.
Whether people use artist names or not is their own choice. I think people can understand the anonymous board culture without enforcing the cult of anonymity. It's not like you see names popping up unnecessarily in other threads, do you? There's also a lot of polite saging in this thread.
The project BENOIST and DJ Zovi are organizing won't be a VIPtronic release. Think of it as music done by people who originally met through the VIPtronic project. There will be a bunch of new faces participating, too. And we certainly don't care to make money on this project.
>>319
jesus phase was done in the style of a famous experimental musician named Steve Reich, and was arguably the same quality. Ship Going Down seems to be mostly interested in organic music and musique concrete. I wouldn't slam that song in particular for being worthless and having no artistic merit. Like Reich's tracks, jesus phase uses phasing to create new sounds out of the same sound looped and layered. The track also has a bell-curve shape and very interesting dynamics between sounds once it starts to drone. I guess art music like that isn't appreciated as much as it should be, though.
>I guess art music like that isn't appreciated as much as it should be, though.
When you hide crap behind the word 'art', it doesn't change that it's crap, nor protect it from valid criticism.
>valid criticism
If you think criticism that consists of complaining about the length and the entire composition of the piece is valid, I question your definition of criticism. If one is going to criticize something in a way where you won't get called out for it, one would give better reasons than that. For example, a criticism that would be valid about this piece that fits with your opinionated statements is that the piece could have had the same effect if it were only 10 minutes long, and that Ship Going Down may have gotten overzealous with taking Reich's model to the extremes, since the middle droning part actually doesn't lend much to the original purpose of phase music like this. I probably would've agreed with you on those points.
Regardless, let's not get into a full-out debate about avant-garde music and get back to the VIP QUALITY, hm? The discussion about the non-VIPtronic album has long since ended in this thread and discussion should resume about the third VIPtronic album.
>>325
I don't think anyone truly believes that a child who draws a horrible sketch has made something with significant artistic merit.
While I agree with your point, let's just drop this. Seriously. Or at least take it somewhere else.
Guys, I think Jesus phase was a joke.
So, two albums? Assuming the QUALITY is not diluted, that's twice as good as one.
Could the VIPPER who goes by the artist name Michigan D. Ghost please email me at zovi@djzovi.com? I have a question to ask that is related to the stuff that's not being discussed in this thread anymore. That is all.
If there's now going to be a non-Vippertronics album project too, where should we go to discuss this?
>>331
Discussion is taking place between the contributing parties. When more tangible information becomes available, a new thread should pop up.
