Would this be a good idea? I was thinking of starting developing one for the sega cd, something like this http://www.geocities.com/eiennarufuyu/advsys.zip A sort of visual novel game. It would be rather easy to make using BasiEgaXorz (a basic comiler for the genesis/sega cd/32x). If we make it for the sega cd we can put cd quality music into the game! However I can't make music, or graphics, or a story line for the game... is any VIPPERS willing to provide there talents?
I make QUALITY music and I'd be half-enthusiast about such a project. (Did Lumber☆, songs for title, etc - http://dqn.dqn.lol.googlepages.com/ - I can do better quality than joke songs of course.) I am also pretty sure that at least one or two musicians from Title and DQN electronics are at least-semi regular here and would probably participate.
You better keep the S part of SAoVQ a S though.
>>2
Great, great, now all we need is an artist and a plot for the game....
I am an artist.
I am a plot.
Oh wait.
I can make some music and write scenes.
Anyone have any basic plot ideas? How about something about an average vipper who owes Daddycool a lot of money and gets exiled from this site, and as a result has to explore the internet, doing VIP Quality deeds to get enough VIP coins to get back, only to find out the site has been taken over by some evil force which he has to defeat?
Or something completely different?
>>8
Anything to do with this site or the internet in general would probably be unfunny.
Something completely different please.
>>10
Thought that might be the case, although it makes it a lot harder to come up with ideas.
>>10
Well if it doesn't have anything to do with this site then it wouldn't really be a SAoVQ video game now would it?
Man, coming up with non-erotic visual novel ideas is hard.
>>12
We could drop subtle hints of VIP quality in places. It doesn't necessarily have to be about the site.
>>1
Any reason you wanna do it on the Mega-CD? I love this console like any sane person, but this moves your idea from the domain of "trivial to realize" towards "huge amounts of grunt work"
Okay how about a post-modernist VN in which the main character is a girl who is always getting hit on by incompetent males?
Okay maybe not.
>>15
Well it's rather simple in BasiEgaXorz, the advantage doing it for the sega cd over the genesis is that we could use mp3's in the game...
>>12
Of course a succession of subculture in-jokes is easier to string together. It's not like we are an unimaginative bunch either, so going this route, everyone will request "It must have lumberjacks and a cat on the table" and you're gonna have a mess, and probably an unfunny one.
I think it'd be better to wait until someone puts an great idea on the table and improve it until it's awesome. (Like I said, we're not unimaginative, this shouldn't take long).
>>22
Sorry for going all /prog/ on this, but I just want to mention there are good cross-platform choices for the vn format, just in case you didn't know. But you probably did and wanna try out this weirdly-named BasiEgaXorz thing so I'll leave it at that.
>>24
Well I already knew that... but it would just be a little more fun to make it for the sega cd!
>>25
What about sega saturn? Is that a possibility. I don't really care what console it is for but I know we have a lot of Sega Saturn fans here.
>>26
The sega saturn is rather complicated to develop for from what i'v seen, so i'm going to say no, unless there is someone else here with knowledge of the system who can code for it.
I would like to shoot out some basic VN plot ideas and maybe that will inspire some of us to manipulate them into something more VIP or entertaining:
Guy goes to school, harem, some sort of drama
Medieval war story with warrior/princess women, think UnderwaterRayRomano
Medieval RPG-type story
Strange convoluted magic-related story (ala Fate/Stay Night)
A bunch of maids serve you or you're a servant
>>27
So let's confirm it being for the Sega CD then. If the OP can handle the programming with it and is comfortable then that's a good starting place and will verify that this project works out.
>>29
OP here, I would say Sega CD would be the best option for what were doing here!
>>28
I think the Kikkoman plot was a great idea. You already have a character with some dramatic background (excuse me for bringing up your past, Kikkoman), motivation, friends, enemies... Though I do believe it would be a mistake to base this around some static setting such as a soy sauce factory. Perhaps start the game off at some point in teenage Kikkoman's life, fighting your way to perfection and revenge?
>>28
I'd like to say "no" five times
>>29
I'd also like to confirm sure the op don't have crazy ideas about what is reasonably feasible before I contribute exquisite pieces of art. Showing pictures and text and music is easy even if the platform is exotic, but if there's actual gameplay, I'm not confident he can handle it without some form of proof.
>>31
I think this sounds like a great idea. We can have him be a completely normal student. The story goes along his evolution towards BECOMING kikkoman. His father is secretly the inheritor of the ancient art of kikkou. His father passes it down to him, shit happens. A good scene for example would be when he fights back against bullies and uses a kikko technique even though his father told him to never use them. That creates a huge drama etc.
Just a little word of logistical wisdom we've learned the very hard way with Title on DQN: when doing a project anonymously or pseudonymously, never let anyone take a job without giving him a short deadline.
Here's an alternate idea, let me know if it sucks: The main character is a VIPPER. He goes about his daily life, browses SAoVQ, plays video games, etc. Except slowly he begins to meet people (presumably girls) who are FROM SAoVQ. So one of them could be like Ms. Cool is his new teacher or something ( and she is a possible love interest). Then he meets Maiddog who is a dog girl etc. The list would go on.
>>33
Well if you need prof I can code here is a little thing I was working on off images I stole from the imageboard here a few days ago. I coded it up in around 4 hours so its not really anything much, noting in it really functions properly. Its for the genesis. http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=102396
>>38
I really don't doubt you can, it's more about whether you're really gonna do it. It's just that I have hanged out a little bit too much in the indie games dev scene, which is full of idiots with big ideas who never finish what they start. If it's a VN, it's not a lot of work, and it can also be picked up by someone else if you abandon. I'd only be scared if the idea started growing some gameplay, you know what I mean?
>>39
Yes I see what your saying here! That is why I thought of keeping it something simple like a visual novel game.
>>41
I know, most of it sucks because I was just testing some stuff out!
>>38
I am impressed. For the amount of time this seems good. I think we are also forgetting that SAoVQ is a very unique community in that we all have assorted talents so it shouldn't be quite as hard getting this together. There are dozens and dozens of programmers, a large community of musicians and some artists. I think we can come up with a really good product if we all work together. Let's try to be active in this and don't be afraid to post if we aren't sure of our ideas or work! Brainstorming should be the focus for now and then later, maybe in half a week or so we can centralize our ideas.
>>42
But without those bugs I could never have attained such happiness! http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1236031800323.png
>>43
True. Well, now I'm fully enthusiast (>>2 here). I'll definitely put in the effort it takes to contribute about 3 to 8 short tracks (the music is interrupted pretty often in this kind of game, so it's probably better to have mostly 80-seconds tracks). I have a little vocaloid-fu too for a theme song that would sound vaguely like English.
By the way, since it's for the mega-cd, I guess there's no way to make the CD-DA loop correctly, right?
>>47
I remember playing sonic cd recently and found it a little annoying that the music fades out before starting again. I don't remember if it's the same in other sega-cd games, but I assumed it means there's no way to instruct the game to do something like "once the audio track hits 1:37.49, seamlessly continue playing from 0:13.18"
>>48
You can make the music loop so when it hits the end of the song its starts over. It doesn't have to fade, that was just a feature in sonic cd I guess.
There's a ragged stray dog running around outside my house and I kind of want to give it some food and water and maybe a bath. Is helping animals VIP Quality?
>>49
Great, then. Not that it's really our concern right now, I was just curious.
So, are we good on the Kikkoman idea?
>>53
I think it sounds good. Merging >>37 >>34 and >>31 seems like a good idea. Kikkoman is a teenager and a student, his father is the last known user of the kikkou technique. He passes it on. Kikkoman's love interests are all some sort of girl version of a SAoVQ character and we build the story with this premise. This was we are avoiding direct inside jokes but we have the entire story built on references. If you don't get the references you will still enjoy the game but the cool advisor Dr. Vipsaurus isn't fully appreciated by you.
>>53
I like the idea, but this thread has only be around for six hours, so American VIPPERs who only VIP at night have not had a chance to propose anything better. Maybe we should wait a day before we settle on a specific idea?
Going on the Kikkoman thing, here's a very basic outline of the sort of clichéd stuff that would work:
Just throwing (bad) ideas.
>>58 The rival should be Sosuman, right? And what about Kikkoman's wife?
>>59
Sosuman, yeah sure. Kikkoman's wife should be whatever romantic interest the player chooses. So it's like you're deciding who Kikkoman's wife is.
Teacher should be DADDY COOL
>>61
Or principal.
>>58
His parents' death should be like in http://www.secretareaofvipquality.net/saovq/kareha.pl/1234585090/37-46
>>62
I can already imagine a scene where kikkoman is fighting a vicious adversary and DADDYCOOL SWOOPS IN saying something like "iLl show YoU tO piCk on SomEoeN youR oWn sIzE if you payme enough ;)" and then throws deadly bills at the enemy Gambit style.
I would like to add that the location of the game should definitely be Saitama! Regardless of what storyline we do.
So many posts in one day.
Out of curiosity what will the images/graphics look like on the Sega CD?
The journey of a man who travels to japan to become the ultimate VIPPER.
>>66
Like the test he posted but with probably bigger images and more colors. And I hope a better font: http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1236031800323.png
I think potential romance should be put aside in pursuit of more purely VIP ideals.
I think that any references to DADDYCOOL should be done very tastefully. Maybe he shouldn't even be a character. Just catching glimpses of him in the background or having allusions made by people to their shadowy corporate overlord seem more appropriate than having him appear suddenly as a money slinging warrior.
It's just a suggestion though, and I'm eager to see this realized no matter how it turns out.
So were going with the Kikkoman idea, now we need to start coming up with some scenes before we start up anything else.
I think we should start off with a very generic opening. Kikkoman has a dream and is awoken by his attractive older sister. I think it would be a nice touch to have her SPEAK in all CAPS sometimes to create EMPHASIS just as the SISTERS sound in the SATAN GUIDE MY COCK flash VIDEO.
We'd need to ask first the ARTIST OF THE VIPPERS if he's still with us and how much work he'd be OK doing before we can really think about it. And if there's another ARTIST available they need to see if they agree on ARTISTIC choices.
>>74
There's a "Satan guide my cock" FLASH VIDEO?
Tell me MORE, friend VIPPER.
>>76
Don't worry, I'm always with you, VIPPERs.
As far as drawing goes, I feel kinda uncomfortable drawing KAWAII MOE FEMALES, but everything else goes.
The beginning should make it seem like it is not a KIKKOMAN game. You play as a kid living in a world ruled by PIG DISGUSTING BRITISH. You are running from the police for the first level or two, when they corner you in an old, abandoned house. The police shoot the boy to death, and he knocks over a shelf as he is dying. A bottle of KIKKOMAN Soy Sauce breaks, and releases KIKKOMAN from his bottle prison. Now you control KIKKOMAN, and must avenge the boys death by overthrowing the PIG DISGUSTING BRITISH EMPIRE. WORCESTERSHIRE WARRIOR will be the leader of the BRITISH EMPIRE.
>>79
That totally detracts from Kikkoman's character... I think the player should feel as though they are becoming Kikkoman, much like an MMO'er works to become their job of choice.
>>80
Yes, I see what you mean. Perhaps, instead of Kikkoman being released from his bottle prison, the boy inherits the power of Kikkoman from the soy sauce?
>>78
I'm all for drawing KAWAII MOE FEMALES, especially when scantily clad.
>>82
If we are going in this direction I am going to have to go ahead and request that there be KAWAII MOE SHOTAS as well. It is only fair.
If we are going in a direction in which anyone can make a request that don't fit the game, I will make outlandish requests.
How are we gonna do the writing?
I don't think we'll find someone who is both dedicated and selfless enough to transform our good ideas into good prose - they'd likely want a lot of creative control, and that may kill our interest in the project. Are we OK going this route?
The alternative, having everybody contribute parts, will never work without heavy editing, to make everything into a cohesive style.
Let's be honest: if the OP takes care of this task, things will go smoothly, but judging from his demo and his posts, I doubt he'll be able to improve much on the material we put together.
But if someone else takes the role of editing, we run the risk that he steal the show, like with a writer.
If we wiki it, we may end up with correct grammar and spelling, but a lot of bad jokes and 4**** memes. If that happens we'll either compromise on low quality text to please everyone, or have weeks of revert wars.
English is my second language, and I think it's the same for many of us, but I'd like to contribute to the writing, whatever storyline we decide to settle on. I'd feel better if one or more non-asshole native speakers would clean up behind us.
Maybe we should also agree that the OP can veto ideas, so we can avoid drama - drama would kill the project.
What do you think we should do?
A wiki-style collaboration, with OP veto powers, sounds about the right thing to do.
Maybe using tanasinn.info might be the best course of action, at least after the brainstorming session. I was looking forward creating a page on tanasinn to rack up ideas.
The most difficult thing to obtain is continuative effort in the project, which means we should act fast until the ideas are hot and people is interested.
More soon.
OP here I'm liking the sound of the wiki idea!
OP again, what do you think the game should look like? The layout of it! I was thinking of something like this, but if you have a better idea you can draw a mock up! http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1236359674825.gif
I've started editing. Feels a bit too much like a wikipedia article, I don't think that's what we need for an internal tool. For example >>58 was just throwing ideas out there, I don't like how the wiki makes it look already totally official on http://tanasinn.info/wiki/SAoVQ_game/Kikkoman_plot - let's not precipitate things.
>>8, will you participate for the music? Or someone else? I've made this almost empty page: http://tanasinn.info/wiki/SAoVQ_game/Music
>>90
A big question to decide on that is what are the size and palette restrictions?
>>94
Well there can be 4 palettes on screen at once, and each one supports 15 colors, and one transparent color. The screen size is 320 x 240.
>>95
Does that mean it would be technically possible to overlay stuff to form a full-screen 60-colors picture or am I horribly misunderstanding how these things work?
Because in a resolution of 320x240 I think it's crucial the pictures be as large as possible. If we can do away with the background I think we should.
>>96
Well I know you can use 2 planes to get 30 colors, but im not sure about using 60... This is the program I use to convert the images http://devster.monkeeh.com/sega/imagenesis/. Most images look ok with a palette of 30 colors.
Heres an example of images being displayed with 15 colors taking up the full screen! This is what it would look like: http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=103584 (note: I did not make this!)
>>98
I've made a pic of it for future reference: http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1236427763406.png
Can the font be changed? The one that's in the demo games is pretty bad I think. Even if it must be monospaced, it'd be nice if we could use something less bulky.
Ya, I guess we could. But it would have to be 8x8...
>>101
I think I can find quite a few good fonts that fit this requirement. If that's not too much of a pain to convert some sort of character sheet to an usable font, I'd like to look through my large collection and propose a few choices that would both be more readable and have more personality.
Well if someone could draw up all the tiles in 8x8 format, numbers, lowercase, and upper case letters, and periods, questions, etc with this program http://devster.monkeeh.com/sega/sgtd/index.html . You can't just auto convert fonts so they work.
8x8 is pretty evil.
saving this thread from oblivion
>>106
Dude, no, chill, mate. It's VIP QUALITY, nothing dies here.
Chill, mate, it's cool.
no option to save, game somehow destroys itself when you die. but also it's really hard to die. (I think these are probably bad ideas, but I have thought of them before and finally have a place to put them.)
Hello everyone I am a artist.
>>113
Would you mind drawing up some scene locations in 320x240 with a palette of 30 colors?
So guys, how about we got started on something while we are still kinda excited?
>>114
Not at all, I would go as far as to say that that is "ii desu yo". Aha ha ha! (or "w" as they say in the East.) I'll post some stuff later.
But are you also able to produce a 30-colors EXTREMELY MOE SUPPORTING CAST?
This is exciting :3
See for yourself.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/971/mikucchaaaaaanowarimash.jpg
OK, let's forget the EXTREMELY MOE SUPPORTING CAST idea.
We're kind of actually waiting for you to say where we're taking this now.
>>123
Well before we start coding anything up we need to start making the scenes/graphics. If someone would start making up the scenes that would be great!
I think we should add post modern elements like all the great VNs.
In it you can play as a guy who is playing a VN about a guy who spends all his time posting on VIP text boards with a focus on adding to a thread about making a VN.
Throw in some time travel and we're golden.
Well guys I have decided to GET SERIOUS about this (I am not the OP just a random VIPPER). I have no talents that are of use to this project other than ideas and organization so I would like to get us rolling on this (assuming we are still interested). I have begun to outline a plot and some basic ideas that I think everyone will find appealing. I will post it sometime soon when I am done.
One key thing that I think will make this project more appealing to everyone is to have the Kikkoman story actually its own path rather than the whole game. I've also managed to develop a good method for us to include SAoVQ/internet/VIPPER references in game without being too obnoxious. I need some more time to work out the rest of the storyline that I am creating and then I will post it in this thread along with various ideas I've been thinking up and little quotations and such that we can use.
My main thought is that we can use my structure and modify it as much as we would like as we go, adding specifics to each portion of it. We can create like pools of ideas and then create outlines for each scene (ex: We want to meet this girl here and talk about food which reveals that the main character is sad). Hopefully we have some good writers that can then translate our detailed outlines into a script.
Other than the storyline we will definitely need artists. Music shouldn't be a problem because there is such a large VIP quality music community. We need to confirm whether or not we have any artists at all and this is important. If you are an artist or know an artist (as long as they can draw well and would be willing to help it shouldn't matter if they are actually VIPPERs or not) get them to post some samples of their work here. That way we can at least know in our minds "we have an artist who draws quite well and know this for sure." We don't NECESSARILY have to have artists though either. We can steal from other games and edit and backgrounds can just be stock images that are edited to look drawn. Keep all of this in mind.
In addition to my previous post I would like to add that I think we should have some sort of weekly meeting on a chat of some sort where we can discuss ideas/get organized/finalize things as they come up and then post the results to this thread. I'm not sure when would be a good time for this and what we should use to do this (IRC?). It's up to you guys. I'll leave that to you. Assuming there are still people interested in this.
First, I'll start using a name in this thread to make things less confusing. I encourage the others to do the same. We need to start understanding who's who and doing what.
I am still interested and I think everyone still is. However I hate IRC, so if it becomes the sort of channel where people idle all the time and reply to messages five hours later, I won't be there.
Like >>126 said, music won't be a problem. I'll help as much as I can, >>8 considers participating, and I bet other people will join in.
I can't draw at all, but I could help with miscellaneous graphics stuff, like drawing interface elements, or tracing a nicer font with the tool the op mentioned.
I can help writing some scenes, but English is my second language so I'm slow. Do you think we're all mature enough to handle writing collaboratively directly on the wiki? So long as we revert and boot off people who don't understand the direction we've agreed on, I think we can make it work.
>>128
Good plan we should also put what our abilities are, general being for most people and maybe artist etc. for people with special talents.
I agree with you on IRC but what I meant was that we would meet at a set time once or twice a week and have basically an internet meeting. It would not be an active chat room. This way we could all get our ideas in and get them added in in an organized manner. We need something to centralize our ideas so that we don't keep coming back and adding on more and more allowing it to diverge and get out of hand. Adding more is always welcome but eventually we will have to stream line the project some.
> we would meet at a set time once or twice a week and have basically an internet meeting
Agreed on that, but what would be convenient for everyone? I'm in GMT+1 and we've probably got people on both sides of the USA. I don't think a rigid schedule of meetings everyone must try to attend will work.
( ゚∀゚ ) YAY, renewed interest! I agree we should all start using names. The IRC idea is good to, however getting everyone on the channel at the same time is a little unlikely. GMT-4 here. As long as we can get most people on at around the same time...
>>130
Maybe we can have two meetings a week. So that everyone is covered?
Sure, but they should be at different times too. But I don't like IRC, no anonymity and discussions that drag on for hours.
>>133
What shall we use? What's a chat we can use that's anonymous?
_ ∩
( ゚∀゚)彡 Names! Names!
⊂彡
>>134
Do we really care that much about anonymity?
I use MSN, AIM, XFire, Skype, and Steam.
Well, I kind of care. I won't bother you if nobody else does.
Anyway I googled around, looks like http://www.lingr.com/ could be nice, no reg required unless you make the room. Wanna give it a try right now?

I'll stay around for a while if someone else wants to test it. Unless someone has an issue with it, I propose we use this thing, and schedule at least one weekly meeting during his free time.
The four of us liked lingr, so we're very likely gonna use it. Please read the archives (http://www.lingr.com/room/94siEU0rpto/archives) often - since the archives are easily available let's consider the chatroom an extension of this thread, so we won't have to summarize too much what happened in there.
Okay guys I have come up with what I think would be a pretty good basic story line based off of everyone's ideas. Feel free to critique/reject/change my ideas too.
I would like to add that while my storyline seems laden with straight forward and obvious SAoVQ references I think we can make them truly REFERENCES in game and not make the game actually revolve entirely around SAoVQ jokes. So instead of having a guy with an AA face, he'll just be a normal person named "Shobon" or whatever. As for injokes inside of the text here is an example I thought of: "Ugh I took the wrong bento box to school again. God I hate my sister and her pink bento boxes." Then it can actually be tied in by having a potential love interest poke fun at him. It could be taken even further with the tsundere going "Ohoho, only two kotoba? Pathetic. You call yourself a man?" What do you think about this style?
Now for the basic storyline (with possibly too much detail and chaos, feel free to reorganize summarize this on the wiki or here maybe):
VIPPER is a normal student in Saitama, Japan. The game starts when you are awoken by your older sister (who is somehow not related to you and your parents are dead). The beginning scene is all about introducing you as essentially what a VIPPER on this board would be: shy, internet-saavy, not entirely comfortable with himself. He would visit a site called BAoBQ which is essentially SAoVQ/2ch but this makes the ingame references NOT obvious to the character. There is then a regular first day at school where you are introduced to his best friend who is also somewhat nerdy.
After the first day at school VIPPER is somewhat sadden by his inability to socialize and be comfortable with himself. That night there is a little bit of internet browsing in which he contemplates on the great times he used to have on his favorite website Pchan five years ago and how he wishes he could replicate the feelings he had then in real life now. He sees a bright light from outside his window and notices a meteor shower coming in right outside his backyard (which is a somewhat expansive field). He is amazed and feels somehow inspired to make a commitment to change himself and live life to the fullest. At this point you choose either I want to find love or I want to become known by all or something like that. Either of these options will give you points towards going down the romance path or the kikkoman path. There will be a certain number of choices that will send you down one path or the other according to how many points you have a decent bit into the game. Love interests, different endings can all be set up on a point system in which certain choices give more or less points for certain categories.
VIPPER awakens excited for a new day at school. He has a new attitude and his friend notices this at school. Sees there is a transfer student day coming up the next day and sees that as a chance to meet new people and utilize his new attitude on life. This night he posts excitedly on his text board and you get to once again make a decision on what he posts leading him towards KIKKOPATH or ROMANCEPATH.
Transfer student day arrives and this introduces four (or three maybe) new characters. Three of these are girls and potential love interests. I have no idea what these characters will be like yet but I think having them be usual (one rei, one tsundere, etc.) might be a good plan and then we can add quirky details that make them interesting. Then there will be a loner guy who is essentially going to be your rival if you choose the kikkopath. After their introduction to the class you listen to what they have to say and choose where you want to go for lunch accordingly. Something I thought funny to say here would be, in response to your friend noting a cute girl, "As for me, it's ____" You will meet one of the three girls and run into the loner on the way. The loner will be stoic and offputting and you can either be a jerk to him or just brush him off. Being a jerk to him will give you a significant leaning towards kikkopath and this is the last time to make a choice between kikkopath and romancepath. You have a talk with one of the girls and start to develop relationship points with them.
You have many opportunities to develop relationship points throughout the game by spending time with them each girl should have an ending in the romance path and then maybe a bonus ending for one or two if you get enough points. On this night you have a chance to talk to your sister about all this and get excited for your new lifestyle. You can get some sister points here which could lead to a special ending in which you end up being romantic with your sister and living with her in the end.
The next few days will consist of you developing a further relationship and getting to know each of the girls and spending time with them alone according to your options. Since we don't know the stories of the girl characters yet we can't be sure what the dates etc. will be like. Sometime during this you will have a new principal who is Daddycool. He is very directly nice to you and you see him as a good guy. In reality daddycool is going to be the main villain, but only in the kikkopath. After these few days if you are on the kikkopath it will make a break with the romancepath. You will be with either your love interest (according to points) or a prechosen girl who is going to be kikkowoman (if its too much work to make it individual to a single girl). An accident of some sort happens outside in school and you leap in front being badly hurt. Daddycool quickly comes to your aid and takes you into his office personally being once again very kind and helpful. You heal very quickly and for a second see yourself as kikkoman in the mirror.
Continuing with the kikkopath you come home and feel strange about what happened that day. You have some sort of dream about kikkoman that night. The next day the loner kid confronts you about liking the girl you are becoming romantically interested in. He makes a threat and leaves. You find out that night that your romantic interest has been kidnapped and you go to her rescue. You are confronted with her tied up and a cloaked figure. You tell him to let her go etc. and then eventually find yourself having to use physical force. The cloak is removed and you notice that it is your loner rival with a strange scar on his body. You begin to fight with him and then suddenly he begins to turn into a half Sosuman (or any other condiment villain). Basically he's mutating, think Resident Evil or something and you barely dodge his attack with some sort of special kikko dodge that you are unaware of, grabbing your love interest and making your escape.
The next day at school is tense and the whole day the loner kid seems almost insane. The kid is going to tell you to meet him late at school to settle this once and for all. You ask that he leaves your love interest alone if he does. When you arrive you see your rival standing in the middle of the school yard. He immediately transforms into a full Sosuman and begins beating the shit out of you. Your latent Kikkoman power comes out and you begin fighting Kikkoman vs Sosuman style. There is some sort of struggle until finally you begin to somehow realize (through a scene where you are floating through the universe or something in the salty way) you can use a kikkobeam. You use the kikkobeam choosing to either just injure him or kill him entirely. You see a figure (with the outline of DADDYCOOL) leave as you leave the scene.
Assuming you injure him you see him the next day and he pulls you off to the said saying he respects you and you are basically now friends in addition he invites you to his house that night to play video games when in reality he wants to tell you about what daddycool did in private. Assuming you kill him, he is there at school despite being dead the night before. He is acting extremely odd and then halfway through the day he starts turning into tanasinn. The tanasinn slowly spreads and spreads taking over the entire town and eventually grasping your leg and locking you into place. As you're about to die with no use of your kikkopowers due to tanasinn you look up and see daddycool taking off in a helicopter.
That night you are told about how Daddycool promised him something that would let him defeat any opponent and said to take one drop of this special sauce each day. They decide to break into the school at night and investigate Daddycool's office. Inside they discover that Daddycool is a trillionare and is doing experiments to help him take over the world by utilizing the special properties of the meteors that crash landed (by mixing them with sauces, you realize you were eating soy sauce at the time of the landing). Daddycool discovers you in his office and cackles doing some dramatic escape move and leaving two sauceminions to take you on. You barely defeat them and leave strange marks of destruction in the school for the next day.
Daddycool eyes you and is especially kind to you the next day at school with a smirk. He hints at you coming to his mansion and something about how you have another chance. You both decide to take daddycool head on. You have to fight some sort of saucemonsters and other creatures within daddycool's mansion. In the final battle against Daddycool he is about to kill you both until KIKKOWOMAN, your love interest arrives and lands a surprise attack, severely wounding him and causing him to leave with some sort of closing line like "IlL sEe YoU agAiN vIPpER ;)" and he makes an escape. You postulate that having sex with the girl turned her into Kikkowoman and you decide to dedicate your life to hunting down daddycool. THE END.
The romancepath endings are TBA according to how we want to design each of the characters. We can have them be quirky in interests etc. and make interesting endings out of it.
Obviously this is pretty rough and somewhat chaotic to follow. There's a lot more to do but I figured something long like this would be at least a good groundwork. Thanks for reading~ Please provide feedback and edit to your liking.
Let's try to come up with a list of Turbo Graphics/PC Engine/Windows 95 visual novels like VIPER GTS so that we can get some artistic and design inspiration.
>>143
( ゚ ヮ゚) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_Famicom_and_Super_Nintendo_adventure_games#Visual_novel
SNES Visual novels would be a good comparison of what this game could look like!
I'm not ashamed to admit that I love dithering.
>>145
I feel the same, but only if is done with PATTERN GRADIENTS
...Anyone still here?
>>147
I am still here. I have decided that for the interface a basic two window approach would be best and I feel it should be textboard themed so, brick background, gray border. I will see if I can create an image of it.
Steve is here. ( ゚ ∀゚)
I saw someone mention that it couldn't be saved, correct?
Passwords can work well, i have used it once before for a little RPG i created for YaBASIC on PS2. (abandoned, however, due to slow speed)
Just a couple questions before going any further:
Will there be items?
Will there be stages in the game where you will be able to go back to do things? Or is the game entirely linear?
>>149
I don't think there will be items and I think the game will be linear although you will go to the school in several different scenes etc. I think we should have a way to save so that you can pick a new path without having to restart the game. The code system seems to work well. Passwords are cool anyways!
I was not really around for a few days but I'm still around.
I really don't like the part where he goes to websites and where memes are dropped all over. Sorry, I don't find it as subtle as you advertise.
>>149
The prototype for Megadrive saved if I remember correctly, so maybe saving in a Mega-CD game is also possible.
>>151
I can see what you're saying about the websites but I think memes can be incorporated subtly maybe not exactly as I described though. Putting in a few memes throughout the story and having characters react to it in a real way makes it maybe not so much subtle as humorous. Either way it's up to everyone, I don't think having memes in the game makes or breaks it. We should still keep references though.
Well the ability to save can be added, but i'm not sure if it will work on a real sega cd? Does any VIPPER have an actual sega cd and want to test it?
>>153
I can get one at a local used game store for cheap. I'm not sure how to run burned games on real Sega CDs but if you instruct me I can be a tester.
>>154
There was no copy protection on the Sega CD, you can just burn an iso and it should work! ( ^∀^)
Get one anyways! Just so you can play SNATCHER.

Hello VIPPERs. My artist friend has decided to help us out by doing pixel art of characters for our game. We have planned out a "Rei"-ish character, a blonde tsundere-ish character, the older sister (ONEE SAMMAAAA), the daddycool equivalent male, that loner character that someone described and then kikkoman forms of course. I will be posting his work in here http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/res/3163.html so feel free to comment (he is also making multiple facial expressions and such for each). He is not by any means a god of art so keep this is mind also he cannot do backgrounds so we will still need someone else for those.
I am still here! I will be on chat tonight, if anyone else is around join in!
VIPPERs. I just realized our game has no name. What should it be called?
>>163
What if we call it "VIPPER"? Just because what if you don't get the kikkoman path. VIPPER is generic and visual novel-esque. "VIPER GTS" comes to mind.
A VIPPER early in this thread mentioned making a new font, I have started working on it and I have uppercase finished! However i'm not sure if it is really much better than what we had before... http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1239376536964.png vs http://img.secretareaofvipquality.net/src/1239376562304.png
So here is the font completed I think: http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=114611

Anyone still here want to start writing scenes around what GIKO posted here >>141 >>142 ? Are you still around GIKO?
>>170
I'm still here. I'm not that great of a writer but I can try. Could use help from an ENGLISH EXPERT though.
I have some new stuff to show you Programming OP, requesting your presence in the chat whenever you have time.
Hello VIPPERs I have spent quite a bit of time putting together a wiki page we can use for writing and developing the rest of the storyline. Please, if you have ANY TIME AT ALL throughout the day spare a few minutes to pop in and do a little to work on anything at all if you can. It would be greatly appreciated and would certainly aid us in getting this project off to a good start. With that said here is the page:
http://tanasinn.info/wiki/SAoVQ_game/Story
I think this city should be where our hero lives -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimizu_Mega-City_Pyramid
But I did not want to add it to that there Wikia unless other VIPPERs agreed.
>>174
This is actually awesome! But do you think we should have it here or in SAITAMA SAITAMA?
Why not both places? From what I've been reading on the wiki, there are 2 different story paths. What if you can only go to the Shinmizu Mega-City Pyramid in one path?
Any updates on this game, OP?
I just want to suggest that since this is going to be a VN, make sure there's more than two times that you get a choice. I've played some bad VNs where there was like no choices at all.
GENUFLECT/"Put it in"/"Rape the maids" should be either joke choices that result in stupid (or perhaps bonus) CGs or stupid endings.
Either that or BAD END.
BUMP! Project is not dead yet! I am making mini games to go along with the game, and the graphics are coming along great! Some examples:

"If only eggs and soy sauce could solve all my problems."
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
I could help with music maybe?
Bumping, you still around ARTIST FRIEND VIPPER?
what are the specifics for game audio? I mean, I can provide you with MIDI files or WAV files in the size you need them, but I have to know what kind of emulation the system offers and an indicative "palette" for the MIDI pads I can use.
Well I guess ARTIST FRIEND VIPPER is gone? Any other pixel artists on SAoVQ?
Is the chat shutting down?
>>196
My internet was down for a while. I have a few new things for you but then I must stop getting art due to time constraints.
I just remembered this thread existed.
Programming OP have you been working on this at all? Is there any progress thus far?

Now that you mention it...
> any VIPPERS willing to provide there talents?
A little way back I wrote some stuff for this, saved it on a flash drive, and then lost it three and a half thousand miles away from where I live. To be honest I was quite impressed with my losing shit skills.
I would do it over but I'm currently writing a play so that I can become a fashionable young playwright and have people like me and and take me out to eat at nice restaurants, so I'm afraid I'll be busy for a while.
I tried to learn basiegaxorz, but i didn't have the motivation to continue. Is it actually impossible to produce a collaborative project, or does it merely require some sort of non-VIP character trait?
>>206
VIPPERs are surprisingly busy. I think we are all college students for the most part. Otherwise we are just lazy. Lazy and busy.
I LIKE THIS THREAD
IT IS THE ONLY THREAD I HAVE EVER LIKED

Bumping from the tanasinn chamber.
>>209
It's not possible to bump from within the chamber. Are you the chamber's operator?
>>210
Σ(゚д゚ )The chamber's operator!? But, he went missing after venturing into the chamber itself!
Did the guy working on this disappear entirely?
>>190 here, I'm still around if someone wants to continue this project
>>215
Hey, why the hell not? I'm sure we have a decent enough programmer. I can write. Or fuck it and just turn this into a shmup.
What all needs to be contributed? I would love to help, but I doubt I could.
>>217
Art/writing storyline/programmer now (I am assuming the original project starter is no longer around/interested). We have some of the art already, I think a few scenes were done. We could instead just do a shmup though.
Oh I'm not comfortable with membership. Can we affiliate with it instead?
> Or fuck it and just turn this into a shmup.
This is suddenly inspiring me.
What if... we make a shmup where you actually TRY to get hit?
Story and Gameplay: DADDYCOOL is your homeowner. You have to payHimENoUgh. To do so, you fly with your vessel through hordes of "enemies" flinging coins.
The more you get hit by the pennies, the more you earn.
But if you crash into the enemies headfirst, you lose money.
At the end of each level there's a boss.
When you get hit there's a money loss.
Your Mom, the IRS and the Dentist of Doom
are ready to make your finances go boom.
If you can save something from their greed,
you can buy the bonuses that you need.
Complaining the money is never enough?
Just ask Ya-chan to loan you some dough;
just keep up with the rates and don't lose,
so you can avoid the cement shoes.
Not as it is described. STGs where enemies use their own trajectory as the main source of danger in the game are rarely very enjoyable in my opinion and experience.
I am >>222.
>>224
I must admit I am not a shmup connoisseur, so my opinions are not very much qualified. Still, I think you have a point there.
I didn't mean it like "the enemies will come at you from every direction trying to kill you", rather something along the lines of "if you stumble over them it's gonna hurt."
This was meant to put some difficulty in the levels before reaching the boss, without the hassle of doing two type of shots or enemies (ones that hurt you and ones that benefit you.) The difficulty can be still tweaked by changing the number of coins you must get to reach the next level.
すみません if I'm not using sage yet.
I would like to see the project resume the original VN plan. If any help is needed with the project, I might be able to lend a hand. I have some decent programming skills. I'm very good with Python and I can cope with lower level languages like C.
Does anyone know where to find any useful information on programming for the PC-98?
What about a SAoVQ DOOM WAD?
http://zdoom.org/wiki/Main_Page
Good luck, youll need it!
On a related note, there's an extremely noob friendly DS game making product around titled simply "DS Game Maker." It's a commercial product but it's not very expensive and there's a limited free version as well. Apparently one can play the exported games on an emulator as well as an actual DS using one of those piratey card things.
I made the following microgame with minimal effort and no coding knowledge whatsoever. Click (or tap if you're trying it on a DS) the aesthetically displeasing red and white button to progress to the second and final screen!
http://tablecat.webs.com/VIPTEST_DS.nds
The free version is limited in that you can't add sound or more than 3 "rooms" and it adds the advertisement splash screen at the start.
Perhaps this information can be put to use for a future game.
Maybe split into separate games?
We could use these threads as the central hub for all discussion.
I am actually quite partial toward Moebius's sentiment of staying with the original VN idea, whether tooled for 90's era console or for PC.
I won't ever give up on this project.
Even a very small and simple game would be fine.
