There are a lot of dumpers (especially for disc-based systems) active on Underground Gamer, so that's the place where the games pop up first. You can use other sites, but since you'll have to wait for the files to be uploaded by someone else, you'll either get the dumps later than everyone else or never even see them.

Then again, most people don't care about things like the redump project, they just want to play the games. Even in that case:

The torrents are well organized
Full romsets are common
The torrents are always well seeded
Lots of obscure PC games are available

I'm pretty sure I sound like a salesman now, so I'll stop - I just felt like giving people a heads-up, that's all.

-

The other day, I was at a thrift store, looking through their books. Their fiction section was lackluster, filled with "Oprah bookclub winners" or whatever you'd call that kind of book. In the non-fiction section, however, they have some interesting stuff. Lots of old computer science and engineering textbooks, manuals, etc. Someone in a related industry must have donated a bunch of stuff. This time, I picked out 3 books: "Japanese Manufacturing Techniques," an interesting management proposal from the days of Japan's bubble economy, "The Soul of a New Machine," a novel about the true story of a team of engineers who were tasked with creating a mainframe computer to rival IBM's offerings for DEC, and "peripherals handbook," a catalog and design reference for a variety of early DEC peripherals (I guess the donator worked on a VAX or something back in the day). Altogether, they came to maybe $2.

After I looking through the books, I begin to return to my buddy, who is combing the fiction section. "Hey h-hey man what books are you looking at? You looking at some computer books? I like the computer books, I've looked at some of the ones you've got there. You stole my books! Haha just kidding." That kind of stuff. I didn't want to be rude, and he seemed pretty nice, so I talked with him a little bit. He asks to take a look at the books I had picked out, and as he gets closer, I noticed that this dude smelled like he'd been smoking either meth or crack.

So he goes off somewhere, and since I've got what I want, I head over to the checkout line. I wait a little bit, and overhear this middle-aged black gentleman asking a female cashier out for a Subway sandwich. "Any time, baby, we can make this happen. Turkey sub, hot peppers, meatball..." Even I was swept away by his chivalry.

I'm about to purchase my books when my tweaking friend approaches. "Look at the book I picked out! I got this one. Do you think this would teach me, you know, about computers?" It was a book about the RPG II programming language, which is about a decade older than COBOL and significantly less useful. I'm pretty interested in the book (I didn't notice it when I was searching), which, unfortunately, doesn't help my case when I try to explain to the guy that the information in the book isn't going to help him. "Hey, do you know about computers? Do you think, maybe, you could, tutor me?" As nice as this guy is, I don't feel like taking a chance at getting stabbed, so I attempt to decline, saying that I don't tutor. My companion, however, is quicker on her feet than I am. She hands the man a piece of paper and tells him to write his contact information down. He does so, and we walk out the door as he pays. I feel kind of bad for lying to such a pleasant guy, but I still don't plan on calling him.

Outside, there's an emaciated woman sitting in the bushes lighting something. I comment to my friend, "I bet that's his girlfriend." Sure enough, as we're walking off, I hear a shout of "Hey baby! These guys are gonna tutor me!"

You never know who you're going to meet at a thrift store.

(〜 ̄▽ ̄)〜 21 days of bumping to come

502 Name: VIPPER : 2010-07-28 23:42 [Del]

Today, I slept on the floor again, with a towel for a pillow.
Whenever I sleep on the floor, I dream much more than I do in a bed. Although, they're almost always bad dreams, so I can't say for sure whether it's a bad thing or a good thing.

Could I kindly request another VIPPER to try sleeping on the floor for me? I want to know if the "extra dreams" business is something everyone gets when being lazy enough to fall asleep a foot away from their bed. Don't worry about comfort; as long as you have enough leg room, it's actually a fairly comfortable way to sleep. You don't even need a pillow - I just used one because I didn't want to hear people talking downstairs.

503 Name: VIPPER : 2010-07-29 02:15 [Del]

>>502
Not fully related, but I feel like sharing TMI regardless.

I've slept on the floor for years as a kid (true complicated cool story). I noticed no difference in the nature of my dreams during those years.
As a side effect of sleeping like that, I can now easily sleep in any place, but I am never fully comfortable sleeping anywhere (often experiencing periodic limb movement, morning cramps from involuntary stretching, and the occasional episode of sleep paralysis)

Every so often I fall sleep at my desk on a reclining chair.
I definitely have a lighter sleep when that happens, and more than the dreams, I remember strongly the half-asleep phases, and what I hear during them.

If music is still playing when I fall asleep in this way, its sound will take a very distant, comfortable, inviting, and eerie timbre. I really can't describe it correctly, but I know that if someone could accurately bottle that illusion into a VST plug-in, he'd be a very rich man.
And when I fall asleep like that in silence, auditory hypnagogic hallucinations take over. They seem to last for minutes, and are much more vivid than those I'd hear in my bed. Sometimes I've heard amazingly detailed music during these hallucinations, but attempting to transcribe it later is useless.

A few hours after falling asleep in this fashion, I tend to wake up very progressively to illogical "zombie brain" thoughts, eyes open. That phase can last for very long but any distraction will jerk me out of it immediately.

Of course, these effects might be more due to the fact I only sleep at my desk when the right mix of caffeine, sleep deprivation, and free schedule makes me too lazy to even want to take the stairs to my room, than to the sleeping environment itself.

I always sleep on the floor at home, I don't even have a bed. If I do sleep in a bed though, I often dream more than when I sleep on the floor, So maybe it's just sleeping somewhere you're not so used to?

That music thing happened to me the other day as well, I was actually going to post about it. It lasted for a couple of minutes after I'd realised I was imagining it, and only ended when that started to make me think I wasn't imagining it and I put my ear to a speaker to find out.

509 Name: VIPPER : 2010-07-29 09:16 [Del]

I just got such a sweet deal at a garage sale. Pocket PC from 2001 running outdated Microsoft Mobile with peripherals, a copy of Cakewalk Home Studio 9 (at least one VIPPER knows what that is), three Dreamcast controllers (although I don't own a Dreamcast, hehe) and a working SNES with cables and one controller.

Seven dollars.
