I had a tutor for about two years and have been to Japan which helped. I know a good amount but I stopped studying for at least 6 months. I need to find some way to launch myself back into it without starting up expensive lessons again. orz

But seriously, tutors suck. It's all too slow (I mean, really slow) and boring and you have to pay for it. I think that the reason why people choose tutors is that they provide some kind of motivation. Well, that's not really a bad idea, but it needs a few tweaks. One actually; just learn the basics in a regular way. Books, tutor, whatever. It makes it easier to make things out when you know what they're made of.

I keep telling to myself think that if your objective is to be able to read stuff aided with references, and to communicate in speech or through computers, then learning Japanese stops being some sort of "lifetime achievement" and becomes no more menacing than English or Spanish. I think remembering kanjis and being able to handwrite them is not that important when you're not learning a language for business or to live a long time in that country. Maybe that's just a convenient lie I need so that someday I'll finally stop consider learning it and just get fucking started.
