Tonight I recalled again that being outside of my room makes me feel lighthearted and giddy. I can scarcely wait for spring to mature so I can lay on the grass and look at clouds rather than reload the same unchanging web-pages.

This one really comes home to me. A few years ago, I housed a Korean exchange student named Ok-hyun. Within about a week the fan death thing had been brought up. Everyone found it hilarious, and it quickly became a running joke. It took about two months, but eventually we managed to persuade him to let the fan stay on while he slept. He died that night. Cause of death was reported as heart failure due to congenital disorder. PLEASE, don't let Koreans sleep with fans on.

This is a really weird software-hardware problem. When I close my laptop lid, the screen naturally goes black, then, when I open it, there's a bar of blackness left at the top of my screen, about 100 pixels high. Okay, I think, might be the screen's fault, but I can move my mouse there, and when I click relevant elements behind the cover of darkness, they appear where they should be in the first place. Anyone has any idea what's going on?

Probably a driver or a "helpful" utility by the oem. If not, your display is gonna go wrong real soon. Don't install Linux problem solved, however booting a livecd to see if that happens could help. There are also Windows livecds, if linux don't support screen blanking on closing the lid of your hardware. If you can't reproduce it in another OS, no need to be concerned.

To the Japanese speaking VIPPERs here (seems like most of us):
I've mastered hiragana, and it'll take me about a week to learn katakana (and about one week more to use it freely like hiragana). I also know some basic Japanese syntax and grammar, but I don't know any kanji. What does VIPPER recommend to do now, start learning grammar extensively, or learn some basic kanji, and take up grammar a bit laterH

I personally left Kanji to be the last thing just because it is the least important. Once you have an understanding of everything else it won't leave you and you can actively communicate/understand things. Kanji is all memorization.
