My lover and I have can't seem to reconcile our thoughts about memory so we were wondering if VIPPERS could help give us new insight into it. I say that everyone accesses their memory through scanning. If someone wants to remember where they left their keys, he thinks back and recalls what he did a few hours ago/a day ago/ect. By tracing back to what his room looked like or what things he did after coming home, he remembers that he accidentally remembered them falling on the ground after he threw them onto the counter. I propose that he 'scans' his memory and goes through the experience of his memory to access it. My significant other disagrees and says that no one else does this. People try to remember something and then it instantly pops into their head. What do VIPPERS think? How do VIPPERS access their memory?
Of course, we both understand that people use different methods of remembering things for different situations. During an interrogation, the detainee is forced to think back or scan the specific event to recall exactly what happened. On the other hand, there have been times when I can't remember a word and I don't have an event (or specific memory) to recall it through, but the word still pops into my head randomly. I guess the question essentially becomes, do other VIPPERS actively and consciously remember things through a process or does it just pop into your heads. We're sure it's both, but which is more common or used more often? My significant other says that I have an unusual way of remembering things, but I think my significant other underestimates the amount of people who remember things the same way as I do.
